Experience Samos: Casa Cook’s Boho-Chic Sanctuary
Why visit?
To split your time between exploring a less-hyped Greek island and unwinding in a boho-chic sanctuary.
Set the Scene
This may be the quickest journey from an airport to a hotel. In fact, the property is so close to Samos airport that it backs onto the runway; however, flights are infrequent, making it feel more like a novelty than a disturbance.
Casa Cook is located in the northeastern part of the island. The sleek, angular buildings, smooth stone pathways, and dark wooden pergolas present a stark contrast to the typical small, white-washed houses scattered throughout the area. It’s minimalistic and modern, with rows of pampas grass dancing in the wind as you approach the lobby.
The hotel features a collection of low, square buildings connected by water, from shallow water features between pathways to communal swimming pools. Open spaces allow a constant breeze to flow around the rooms, creating a serene environment with swaying dried grasses and olive trees.
Across the road lies the beach house, an all-day restaurant that serves a breakfast buffet in the mornings, followed by light lunches and Mediterranean evening meals. A well-stocked bar is just steps away, accompanied by neat rows of sun loungers on the narrow stretch of sandy beach facing the Aegean Sea. With lounge seating in neutral shades, the atmosphere is inviting as you enjoy a local Samos beer while chilled electronic beats fill the air.
The Backstory
Samos may not be the first destination that springs to mind when considering a Greek island getaway. A quick survey of friends reveals that few know its location, which is just 40 minutes by boat from the east coast of Turkey. The island may not boast the same level of fame as its neighbors like Santorini and Mykonos; nevertheless, it offers verdant mountains, ancient ruins, and sandy beaches. Casa Cook has successfully launched its latest property here, a choice that reflects the island’s beauty and culture.
This marks the fifth Casa Cook venture for the Fosun Tourism Group, which acquired the boutique lifestyle brand from Thomas Cook in 2019. Design was a crucial aspect of this project, and the Athens-based firm Block722 was commissioned to create a modern aesthetic that embraces the spirit of Samos. Their design efforts received recognition with a Hotel Design Award at Milan’s 196+ forum.
The Rooms
The hotel layout mirrors traditional Greek houses found in Samian villages, known as kamares, with rooms organized into neighborhoods connected by swimming pools. There are 128 rooms available, from swim-up suites with communal pools to those with private pools, as well as rooftop suites featuring jacuzzis.
The room design incorporates earthy textures and natural materials, with muted tones creating a relaxing environment. A spacious bathroom showcases a contemporary mix of concrete and wood. Sliding glass doors from the bedroom open to a private pool, complete with ample sun loungers. Room service adds an extra touch of comfort after a day spent relaxing.
Food and Drink
Renowned Michelin-star chef Alexandros Tsiotinis serves as the culinary consultant, focusing on modern interpretations of Greek cuisine made from locally sourced ingredients. Expect dishes like triple-fried potatoes with feta, chickpea and lamb fritters with sumac sauce, and grilled octopus souvlaki. The moussaka croquettes stand out as a must-try, and the Greek salad features juicy tomatoes, crumbling feta, and crispy bread—making it a fantastic lunchtime option.
The Neighbourhood
Pythagorion, named after the island’s famous former inhabitant, is just a short 15-minute walk away. Alternatively, a taxi is readily available if you prefer convenience. Along the harbour, traditional tavernas invite you to indulge in local dishes, where families and couples alike enjoy the lively ambiance. Consider taking a trip to Kokkari, a charming fishing village nearby, perfect for enjoying local beverages as the sunset casts a magical hue over the sea.
The Service
One of the highlights of the stay is the exceptional service, as the hotel employs a majority of local staff who are knowledgeable and eager to assist. Their insights about the food, wines, and beers enhance the overall experience, making you feel welcomed and valued.
Eco Efforts
The hotel has made clear commitments to sustainability. Measures include a ban on plastic, sourcing furniture locally, and obtaining food from nearby producers. On top of that, the hotel team actively participates in cleaning litter from surrounding hiking trails, contributing positively to the environment.
Accessibility
The hotel provides rooms designed for travellers with limited mobility, with easy access via ramp and elevator in the main building. The restaurant and bar at the Beach House are also at street level, ensuring overall accessibility.
