Pinterest-worthy interiors plus freshly baked goods at the ready – what more could we ask for?
There is no better way to be greeted at a new place than with baked goods and caffeine – and this was the case when checking into The Hydeaway. This charming getaway in The Lanes, Brighton’s historic quarter, is possibly one of the best places to spend a rare sunny UK weekend. A stay here begins just downstairs at the Flour Pot Bakery, where we’re treated to coffee while Lizzie, the manager, fetches the keys and leads us past a few relaxed holiday-goers enjoying cappuccinos and pastries in the sun, to a neat black door at the side of the bakery.
The Place
The aptly named Hydeaway feels like a nest above the bakery, with light beaming into the stairwell from a very substantial terrace. Most of the flat is located on one floor, featuring a small kitchen, shower, and master bedroom delightfully renovated to Pinterest-worthy perfection. Another very small and narrow staircase leads to a lovely little loft room with sky views. From dusty pink tiles to dimmable hanging bulbs and original wooden doors and sash windows, this bolthole’s whimsical interior is reminiscent of a fairytale, akin to Rapunzel’s tower above the hustle and bustle of the Lanes.
The other aspect we appreciated is how considerate the owners have been. Every little detail a guest might need was taken care of, ranging from tiny spoiling details such as Aesop hand wash and fresh towels to more practical items such as sun loungers and an outdoor heater. Additionally, there’s even an honesty bar on the terrace, stocked with ice, mint, and delightful bottled refreshments.
The Backstory
The name ‘The Hydeaway’ doesn’t just refer to the treehouse feel of the apartment; it’s also a nod to Hydes, the owners of the Flour Pot Bakery: Jasmine, an interior designer, and Oliver, a chef and caterer. They opened their first bakery upon noticing a lack of high-quality bread in Brighton. As one bakery expanded to nine, the Flour Pot has established itself as a staple within Brighton’s vibrant foodie scene. The Sydney Street branch, which we stayed above, has been trading for seven years and was Jasmine’s first design project, making the decision to buy and renovate the flat above feel like the cherry on top. The result is a space that, while distinct from the cafés, clearly reflects Jasmine’s signature blend of style and comfort.
The Food and Drink
Upon arrival, you’ll find a well-stocked kitchen with teas and spices, as well as Milk Shed coffee, Flour Pot fresh bread, eggs, butter, and jam. You can also enjoy breakfast or any products from any Flour Pot Bakery with a 25% discount during your stay. The terrace is perfect for having a takeaway or home-cooked meal with a bottle of wine from Ten Green Bottles, a lovely organic wine shop located just five minutes down the road. Brighton itself is a dream for foodies, offering everything from fine dining to a great selection of delicious street food spots, classic British pub grub, and traditional fish and chips by the seaside.
