Explore a Unique Hobbit House in East Sussex Winery

We stayed in a whimsical earth house for the weekend.

‘Are you in New Zealand?’ my Kiwi friend excitedly asked over Instagram after seeing my latest post. Deceivingly, I’m not. I’m less than a two-hour drive from London, at a winery in the Rother Valley, East Sussex. It wasn’t the photos of the wine or the vineyards though that made it look as if I’d flown to the other side of the world for the weekend; it was the unique accommodation.

Set the Scene

After a two-hour drive from London, we pulled into the winding drive of the winery and were met by a tractor. Behind the wheel was America Brewer, a vivacious Brazilian native who welcomed us warmly. America owns and lives at Oastbrook Estate with her English husband Nick, and their lovable golden retriever, Laura, who dutifully welcomed us at the Hobbit House door.

The Place

The concept of a Hobbit House may sound whimsical, but this hideaway – with a flourishing meadow on the roof – resembles something out of a Grand Designs episode rather than a mere gimmick. The bulbous doors are custom-made, and the stars on the blue dome ceiling are hand-painted. Surprisingly spacious, it features an open-plan living room, dining, and kitchen space, flanked by two bedrooms with generous ensuites on either side. Everything is comfortable and well-equipped, from toiletries in the bathrooms to a kitchen equipped with a coffee machine, making the setup ideal for a family or two couples.

If the sun is shining, expect to spend much of your time in the front garden. There’s a dining table, a barbecue, a hot tub with views of the vineyard, and the sound of birdsong all around. It’s also the perfect spot to enjoy wine and a welcome basket spread of local cheeses and crackers.

The Backstory

If you indulge in the popular wine tasting during your stay – and you should – you’ll hear all about America’s animated history and how she unexpectedly ended up working in the Sussex countryside. The estate was originally owned by Guinness for farming hops, and America and Nick reside in the original Oast house. Interestingly, the Hobbit House was initially intended to be a treehouse, but due to planning permissions, the couple instead suggested an earth house, which blends harmoniously into the landscape.

The Food and Drink

Guests will be pleased to utilize the kitchen, or venture to numerous pubs nearby in Bodiam. A vineyard tour and tasting option is available, providing generous servings of their Rosé, Sparkling Wine, Pinot Gri, and Pino Noir, along with the option to purchase bottles to take home.

Final Thoughts

If you’re checking out on Sunday, a visit to Bodiam Castle in the morning is recommended, followed by a delicious roast at The Castle Inn across the road.
