Set the Scene
Discover this Wes-Anderson-style pink palace down a palm-lined drive complemented with fountains looped in pink petunias. Just off the city’s cool Kloof Street, the hotel boasts clear views of Table Mountain. This tranquil oasis spans nine acres, offering a sanctuary from urban noise. Strawberries-and-cream-striped towels line the spectacular swimming pool where locals are often seen on the terrace sipping Champagne or home-steeped iced tea while enjoying beautiful garden views accompanied by the gentle sound of tennis balls plopping over the net.
The Backstory
Although the British admiral was never a guest, the house was named in his honour following his death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1806. Later, shipping magnate Sir Donald Curry envisioned creating a dream hotel for first-class passengers on his Union-Castle shipping line. It opened to wild fanfare in 1899 as the first hotel in the city offering hot and cold running water. The hotel was painted pink after the First World War, signifying peace, and it now boasts its own Pantone shade. In 1925, 80 date palms from the Canary Isles were planted along the drive in honour of a visit from the Prince of Wales; the hotel continues to attract a stream of famous guests, with potential sightings of celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio or Charlize Theron at breakfast.
The Rooms
The hotel reflects its British heritage, with charming garden cottages located behind the main building. Each cottage features its own rose garden and picket fence along with direct access to a quieter, adults-only pool. Inside, guests will find Venetian mirrors, toile wallpaper, and a diverse assortment of artwork—from maritime memorabilia including oil paintings and model ships to eye-catching contemporary pieces.
