Travel Insights from Jon Hamm
Where was the last place you travelled to?
Most recent trips over the pandemic have been work-related, but the last “fun” trip I took was to Yellow Springs, Ohio, where comedian Dave Chappelle resides. Even though it’s a small town, it has a great antiques shop, adorable restaurants, and delicious ice cream. I also attended some of Dave’s Summer Camp shows. Currently, I’m working in Boston, then heading to Rome for a couple of days, before my girlfriend and I spend two weeks traveling around Italy, including Ischia, Calabria, and the Amalfi Coast.
Where in the world have you felt happiest?
I once worked on a movie in North Africa and planned to continue traveling east back to Los Angeles. However, due to overwhelming circumstances, I decided to return home directly after finishing work. Now, my home brings me immense happiness, especially since I’m 50 and enjoy life there with my dog.
Name a place that lived up to the hype
The Amalfi Coast truly blew me away with its beauty. We stayed near Positano and took day trips to Ravello and beautiful privately-owned islands. Hawaii also ranks high on my list; it’s incredibly fragrant, with ideal temperatures and stunning waters. Kauai, known as the Garden Island, is particularly enchanting—more relaxed than the other Hawaiian islands, and its Na Pali Coast feels like a primeval forest. One of my favorite spots is Hanalei Bay, where you can surf, snorkel, or simply unwind under an umbrella with a book.
And a place that least lived up to the hype
Having grown up in St. Louis, Missouri, every trip I’ve taken has been a positive experience in its own right. I feel fortunate to travel, especially as most of my adventures are work-related, where I can go with the flow as a mellow traveler.
Which is your favorite city?
London is one of my favorites since I have many friends I’ve met while filming there. I appreciate its rich culture and vibrant scene, which for me includes pubs and exclusive clubs. I often rely on the recommendations of film director Edgar Wright, who has a good understanding of the local landscape, and I’ve enjoyed attending some memorable concerts with him. Both London and New York City are cosmopolitan hubs, making them equally enticing to me.
Describe your favorite view
I’m definitely more of a sunset person. When you’re in Hawaii, the sunsets over the ocean are breathtaking, offering an unparalleled experience of nature’s beauty.
What do you pack first?
I pride myself on being a good packer, preferring to travel light. My essentials include comfy shoes—often a pair of Converse that can be dressed up—a blue blazer, warm jackets, and sweaters. I make sure to include a reliable pair of jeans. With just a small suitcase, I could manage quite well.
Who’s the most interesting person you’ve met on your travels?
During my travels in Amalfi, I had the pleasure of meeting a fascinating hotelier, Giovanni Russo, who introduced us to his private island for an unforgettable lunch.
Describe a childhood holiday memory
We didn’t often vacation far, as money was tight. Instead, we drove to my father’s family in Key Biscayne, Florida. The journey took two days, but being near the beach made it worthwhile. I would snorkel daily until I got sunburned, only to complain until the pain subsided and snorkel again.
Where did you go on your first holiday without your parents?
Many friends spent their senior year in Alaska, working in a cannery and then backpacking around Europe. Unfortunately, by that time, both my parents had passed, and finances were a challenge for traveling. I strive to make up for those missed adventures now.
Tell us about a great little place you know
A longtime favorite of mine is Little Dom’s in Los Angeles, an Italian trattoria that feels like a cozy, local neighborhood spot where you often run into familiar faces.
Which is the smartest hotel you’ve stayed in?
One standout is The Peninsula in Hong Kong. I visited with Richard Ayoade for his show Travel Man. A hotel accessible by helicopter certainly has a unique charm, making you feel like an important guest.
What’s the best filming location you’ve worked in?
My first filming experience was in Columbus, Georgia, at Fort Benning army base for a movie titled ere Soldiers. We later shot in California at Fort Hunter Liggett, which was particularly enjoyable as we spent a lot of time on location. It fostered strong bonds with the cast, including Dylan Walsh, Rob Bagnell, Greg Kinnear, and Sam Elliott, many of whom remain friends today.
