Adventurer Raha Moharrak on Why Saudi Arabia is a Traveler’s Dream Destination
With a penchant for adventure and a passion to defy the status quo, Raha Moharrak’s trailblazing journey has taken her around the world. The Saudi mountaineer earned the impressive accolade of becoming the youngest Arab to successfully climb the Seven Summits. However, wherever she is in the world, her hometown of Jeddah – and its warm hospitality – is never far from her mind.
What Makes Saudi Arabia Special as a Destination?
Saudi Arabia is one of the last remaining natural undiscovered gems on planet Earth. In an age where everything has become internationalized, there are rarely any surprises. Thus, Saudi Arabia stands out as a destination full of unexpected beauty. The local people are incredibly hospitable, the topography is vast, and the culture is uniquely diverse. Imagine one of the last remaining unknowns, with limitless untapped potential as an adventure destination – that’s Saudi Arabia. Even as someone born and raised here, I’m still discovering the vast amount of beauty and unique destinations it has to offer, from the ocean to the mountains to the caves.
A First-Time Visitor Has Only 24 Hours to Spend in Saudi Arabia. Where Should They Go?
Saudi Arabia is renowned for its hospitality – we love to host people. I would suggest a visit to Jeddah, which boasts beautiful mountains, lovely landscapes, and an amazing art scene. Although it’s challenging to see everything in just 24 hours, the most important aspect is for travelers to experience the beauty of the land and the kindness of the locals.
When You’re in Need of Inspiration, Where Do You Head?
I have two sources of inspiration. Firstly, the ocean: The Red Sea is spectacular; I love its wildness and the freeing feeling it provides. Growing up here, it’s truly part of who I am. If not the ocean, I draw inspiration from the rich history and culture found in Jeddah. Historic locations in my home city continually inspire me.
When You Travel, What Do You Miss About Your Home Country?
Of course, I miss my family. However, I also long for the familiarity and kindness of the Saudi people. When I visit places where people aren’t as warm and friendly, I find myself missing that unique sense of home.
What’s the Coolest Thing Happening in Saudi Right Now, or in 2021?
There are numerous exciting developments currently taking place. The most remarkable aspect is the evolution of women’s rights and their growing role in the community. We are experiencing a phenomenal change and shift in women’s empowerment in the kingdom. This evolution is incredibly positive.
