The Ultimate Local’s Guide to Exploring Bahrain

The Arts and Design Scene in Bahrain

Since graduating from Central Saint Martins ten years ago, Ammar Basheir has become one of Bahrain’s most prominent designers. His career has seen him working extensively with Sheikha Mai, president of the Bahrain Authority for Culture & Antiquities, as well as completing projects for Middle Eastern royals and the likes of George and Amal Clooney. While Ammar splits his time between London and Bahrain, it’s his home country that still has his heart.

Exciting Times for Arts and Design in Bahrain

Bahrain has a rich cultural heritage and has always embraced art and design. The art scene is vibrant, showcasing a vast array of artists who follow different traditions, from modernist to avant-garde. Moreover, there is a distinctive handicraft industry, ranging from wooden shipbuilding (dhows) to pottery and embroidery, which lays the foundation for more innovative approaches. As Bahrain is an island and a center for trade, the influences across art and culture are significant, both in the past and present. What is truly exciting is that both the art and design scenes have evolved tremendously, providing increased platforms to enhance accessibility.

Experiencing Bahrain

There is something very real, magical, mysterious, and spiritual about Bahrain. Much of this essence derives from its history—it was both the Garden of Eden and an ancient necropolis. However, the heart of Bahrain is its people. Residents, tourists, and expats alike share the same sentiment about Bahrainis: they pride themselves on embracing diverse cultures, making everyone feel welcome and connected. Therefore, throughout Bahrain, a chill vibe permeates the atmosphere, putting visitors at ease and making them feel at home.

Your 24-Hour Guide to Bahrain

If a friend were visiting and had just 24 hours in Bahrain, I would recommend startiung their journey at Green Bar, a healthy café that utilizes seasonal Bahraini ingredients and sells locally made beauty products. For lunch, Haji’s Cafe in the old souk of Manama offers local Bahraini dishes, while My Cafe is perfect for catching up with friends over drinks on the terrace. To immerse in culture, a trip to the Bahrain National Museum is essential for a comprehensive overview of the country’s rich history. The pearling path, recognized as Bahrain’s second UNESCO World Heritage Site, is also a must-visit, as it tells a unique story of the pearling trade, a significant aspect of our cultural identity.

Must-See Attractions

The La Fontaine Centre of Contemporary Art is particularly noteworthy. Housed in a historic building in the heart of old Manama, it has been transformed into a contemporary art gallery, restaurant, and spa. I was personally connected to this place, as Fatima Alireza, the owner, hired me to design my first art exhibition immediately after graduating, making it invaluable to me.

Unique Shopping Experience

Gold and natural pearls are distinctive to Bahrain. Exploring the old souks in Manama and Muharraq reveals a rich tapestry of diverse cultures through textiles, fragrances, and food. Hours can easily be spent wandering through these vibrant markets, often culminating in a visit to local perfumers to create custom fragrances.

Accommodations in Bahrain

Nuzul Al Salam boutique hotel, which I designed, is located in the historic streets of Muharraq. This project resulted from a collaborative effort between Bahrain’s Shaikh Ebrahim Center and the UAE’s Ministry of Culture and Youth. The architecture of this historic house is significant to its era, featuring a central courtyard and surrounding bedrooms. Preserving traditional homes has been a vital part of my career, and the interior design process for this project was deeply personal. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, both regionally and globally, which I take great pride in.
