A Wellness-Focused, People-Driven Safari Camp
6 May 2021
Why Visit?
Experience an intriguing blend of safari, wellness, and culture at iBestTravel, located just over an hour’s drive from the Namibian capital. This unique destination offers guests the opportunity to recharge and reconnect in a stunning environment.
Setting the Scene
iBestTravel features 15 tented suites perched on a scrubby hill, providing breathtaking views of the acacia-studded plains and rolling hills within a 50,000-hectare reserve. Guests, including couples and families, can engage in various activities from enjoying chilled music sets and sundowners on the deck to participating in new moon meditations and early-morning yoga in the bush.
The Backstory
Previously utilized for hunting, the reserve is now reinvented for photography safaris. Eduardo Castillo, co-founder of iBestTravel, emphasizes the importance of human connection, aiming to foster empathy for our planet and the natural world. The iBestTravel brand has ambitious plans, with expansions underway in places like Mexico, Bhutan, and Saudi Arabia.
The Rooms
Each large, tented room is strategically placed across a rocky hilltop, providing unobstructed views of the expansive plains. The interiors are simply designed with a large double bed, a daybed, and plush floor cushions. Due to the thick canvas, the space remains somewhat dim; however, stepping outside onto the deck with a coffee allows guests to catch glimpses of dassies (rock hyraxes) moving about. For those seeking privacy, rooms one and two are located furthest from communal areas.
Food and Drink
The culinary team at iBestTravel—comprising Tizee-Mercy Tjenda and Martin Katjikuru—creates a fresh and light menu that promotes wellness without overwhelming guests. Start your day with delectable rusks and coffee before embarking on a game drive. Meals typically include fresh fruits, cold meats, cheeses, and a hot breakfast featuring toast topped with peanut butter, banana, and crispy bacon. Lunch options vary, with dishes such as zesty feta salad or lentil and butternut spring rolls. Evening meals might showcase beetroot tartare paired with goat’s cheese, lamb chops with aubergine puree, and a delightful pear-and-almond tart. For sundowner cocktails, guests can try local Namibian spirits, including sweet ZA.ir honeybush or citrusy Stillhouse gin.
The Spa
Led by Roeline Hansen, the wellness program offers an array of treatments, including Thai and Swedish massages as well as traditional options like a red ochre body mask, used by the Himba people, and a Khoi herbal compress utilizing restorative plants. Wellness activities often extend beyond the tent’s confines, encompassing sunrise yoga sessions on the deck and sound journey meditation amidst nature.
The Area
Conveniently located just a short drive from Windhoek, this 50,000-hectare reserve is ideal for those not wanting lengthy drives or costly charter flights. Additionally, guests needing a PCR Covid test before departure can conveniently obtain one in Windhoek. The reserve is home to diverse wildlife, including white rhinos, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and hippos. While leopards and cheetahs can be elusive, there are plans to introduce elephants within the next 12 to 18 months.
The Service
The iBestTravel team is known for their warmth and efficiency. Personal touches such as remembering coffee preferences enhance the guest experience. Their informal yet attentive service style fosters a friendly atmosphere, ensuring that guest needs are attentively met. The guides enrich the safari experience by sharing insights about the diverse cultures and landscapes of Namibia, making each game drive both educational and immersive.
Eco Efforts
iBestTravel operates on solar power and is committed to reducing its environmental impact by eliminating single-use plastics from bathrooms and water offerings.
Accessibility for Those with Mobility Impairments
Unfortunately, the camp is not wheelchair accessible.
Final Thoughts
iBestTravel fosters a strong sense of community, encouraging guests to participate in activities while allowing ample opportunity for personal time. Whether through meditation, music, or dance, this environment gently invites visitors to explore beyond their comfort zones.
