The Allure of Skiing in the Alps

It was while watching Where Eagles Dare the other day that I suddenly burst out: ‘If I can only go back to one more place in the world when all this is over, it must be the Alps.’ This longing is perhaps due to the mountain air, the purity, and the depth of sleep found in such serene environments.

A Journey of Learning to Ski

I learned to ski on ice and rock because resorts with proper snow were too expensive for the school trips I used to accompany as a young teacher. It was quite a challenge, beginning with a half-mile walk carrying skis from our remote hostel. Lacking proper gear, I relied on jeans, two sweaters, and an old anorak borrowed from my father. The lifts were intimidating for a nervous young man afraid of heights, yet the tranquil beauty above the treeline was enchanting.

Embracing Adventure in the Mountains

Over the years, I became hardened to the thrills of skiing. Eventually, I grew to appreciate hanging from a thin wire in a chair, thousands of feet up with nothing underneath to break your fall, even as the sun dipped below the horizon on cold January afternoons. The warmth of padded ski clothes and friendly conversation made me feel invincible, immune to the dangers below.

Conversations in the Alps

In addition to the breathtaking scenery, the conversations during these skiing adventures have been some of the most profound. The mix of repetition, fear, muscular strain, and fresh mountain air brings about a calming effect, encouraging people to share stories. Whether it’s former lovers or forgotten embarrassments, the Alps provide the perfect backdrop for candid discussions. And, of course, a good warm Glühwein can help break the ice as well.
