2025 Toyota GR Corolla Overview: Surprising Automatic Transmission Insights

2025 Toyota GR Corolla: A Rally-Inspired Hot Hatch

The GR Corolla is a rally-inspired, turbocharged three-cylinder, all-wheel-drive hot hatch that enthusiasts have long desired from Toyota. Its execution exceeds expectations, and with the successful releases of Toyota’s Gazoo Racing (GR)-enhanced models, the brand demonstrates a renewed commitment to fun-to-drive vehicles. Notably, the GR Corolla maintains a manual-only transmission, enticing car enthusiasts, but has introduced an eight-speed automatic transmission for 2025, broadening its appeal.

DAT Gearbox: A New Automatic Option

The new automatic transmission, named Direct Automatic Transmission, marks one of several exciting enhancements for this performance version of the Corolla. Toyota has also increased torque, fine-tuned ducting, and implemented additional performance upgrades. This eight-speed automatic aims to provide seamless shifts and optimal gear selection.

This transmission distinguishes itself from competitors like Volkswagen’s Golf R, featuring a traditional torque-converter design instead of a dual-clutch system. Therefore, it will be fascinating to evaluate how “direct” the GR Corolla’s new automatic feels compared to alternative setups.

Enhanced Power and Stability

The 2025 model brings increased power output, with the G16E-GTS engine now delivering 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque—a notable increase of 22 lb-ft compared to previous trims. Furthermore, the incorporation of Launch Control for the new eight-speed automatic adds to its driving excitement.

This hatchback receives significant suspension upgrades as well. Toyota has optimized the rear suspension geometry and added front and rear rebound springs, which contribute to a flatter, more stable driving experience in fast corners.
