2025 Nissan Ariya NISMO: Performance Falls Short of Expectations

2024 Nissan Ariya NISMO: The Sportier EV Option

The Nissan has made significant strides in showcasing a sporty electric vehicle. The new high-performance version, the 2024 Nissan Ariya NISMO, leverages the NISMO (NISsan MOtorsport) sub-brand’s prestige. This exciting model is set to launch in Japan and Europe, marking a unique offering as the only NISMOs currently available in America are based on the Z and GT-R sports cars.

Ariya Ready for More Power?

The Japanese-market Ariya NISMO comes in B6 and B9 versions, both featuring NISMO-designed 20-inch wheels fitted with 255/45R20 tires. Inside, the vehicle boasts specially designed seats, stylish trim, and premium features throughout. NISMO has also retuned the suspension to complement the added power.

The major distinctions between the two trims revolve around battery capacities and the power output of each dual-motor setup. The B6 is equipped with a 66-kWh battery pack, delivering a combined output of 362 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque, a notable increase compared to the standard Ariya Engage e-4orce. The B9 variant comes with a more robust 91-kWh pack, elevating the output to 413 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque.

Nissan claims a 10% peak motor output increase for the NISMO models, alongside an exclusive NISMO driving mode designed to maximize responsiveness. Additionally, the company plans to incorporate a sound generator reminiscent of the thrilling sounds from Formula E racing, which is sure to enhance the driving experience.

Despite the increased power, the Ariya’s DC fast charge rate remains at a moderate 130 kW. This means it will take approximately 35 minutes to charge the 66-kWh pack from 10% to 80%, and about 40 minutes for the 91-kWh pack.

With More Power Comes … Mediocre Acceleration?

On September 9, 2024, Nissan provided an update for the European version of the Ariya NISMO e-4orce, reporting a power output of 429 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque. However, it appears that acceleration may not be as impressive as expected. The NISMO is estimated to achieve a 0-to-62 mph sprint in “within five seconds,” which pales in comparison to competitors like the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

So, Is the Ariya Making Its Way to America?

Nissan has not yet confirmed if the 2024 Ariya NISMO will be available in the U.S., but the Japanese release is slated for this spring. A representative from Nissan stated that while there are currently no plans for a NISMO variant in the U.S., they remain open to market opportunities based on customer demand.

The pricing details for the European and Japanese models were not disclosed during its debut at the 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon. However, the introduction of the NISMO variant into Nissan’s electric vehicle lineup is certainly a thrilling development for enthusiasts.
