2025 Honda Civic Hybrid Overview
The Return of the Honda Civic Hybrid
With the discontinuation of the Insight two years ago, Honda lacked a standalone compact hybrid to compete against the likes of Toyota’s Prius or the newer Corolla Hybrid. This gap has now been refilled by the Honda Civic Hybrid, which returns after not being sold since 2015. Previously, Honda offered various Civic Hybrid versions, often overlapping with the Insight. However, previous models often delivered sluggish performance. The new-for-2025 Honda Civic Hybrid is expected to maintain excellent MPG while vastly improving power and overall performance in the refreshed Civic lineup.
Trim Levels and Performance
For the 2025 model year, the Honda Civic is offered in LX and Sport trims for both sedan and hatchback versions. These trims carry over the last year’s 2.0-liter I-4 engine paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Notably, the LX has been dropped from the hatchback lineup, leaving the Sport as the base hatch option.
Significantly, the hybrid-only Civic Sport Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid trims replace last year’s EX and Touring trims in the sedan and hatchback offerings. These new hybrid trims are positioned as the most powerful and well-equipped options within the civilian Civic lineup.
Enhanced Powertrain
The hybrid Civics boast an impressive 200 hp and 232 lb-ft of torque from their hybridized 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle I-4 engine. Consequently, they deliver more power than the Civic Si sedan, and this aligns with the recent strategy of modern hybrids that balance power with efficiency.
Fuel Efficiency and Driving Modes
The 2025 Honda Civic Sport Hybrids utilize a two-motor setup without a traditional transmission. At city speeds, the gas engine effectively acts as a generator, providing power while the primary electric motor handles acceleration. This design is highly efficient, with the larger Accord model achieving up to 51 mpg city, and in the lighter Civic, nearly 50 mpg is expected. Drivers can choose between Economy, Normal, and Sport driving modes, enhancing their driving experience.
Interior Features
The 2025 Honda Civic Sport Hybrids maintain stylish interiors with black or gray color options, featuring comfortable cabins. Standard equipment includes a moonroof, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and unique hybrid-specific graphics in the digital gauge cluster.
The five-door Sport Touring Hybrid includes premium amenities such as leather seating, a Bose audio system, and a nine-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Moreover, it features integrated Google Built-In, allowing access to Google services directly from the infotainment system.
Availability and Pricing
The 2025 Honda Civic Sport Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid will be available in the summer, manufactured in Canada and Indiana. Although official prices are yet to be announced, expectations suggest a starting price below $30,000 before delivery charges, with the Sport Hybrid sedan likely ranging from $28,000 to $34,000.
