2025 Honda Civic Overview
The 2025 Honda Civic may not appear distinct from the 2022–2024 models seen on American streets since 2021; however, the lineup has experienced a significant shift: half of it is now hybrid-powered. Among the four trim levels offered on the Civic sedan and hatchback models, two are exclusively hybrid. This transition raises the question about how it has impacted the popular compact Honda’s pricing and the significant mpg increase provided by the new hybrid options.
The 2025 Honda Civic Lineup
For 2025, Honda has aligned the Civic sedan and hatchback lineups to match available trim levels more closely. Previously, the body styles only shared the entry-level LX and Sport trims, while the higher models were distinct, called EX and Touring for the sedan and EX-L and Sport Touring for the hatchback. Although the LX and Sport trims maintained similar specifications, buyers had the option of a manual transmission in the Sport hatchback, whereas the sedan and LX variants were solely offered with Honda’s continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
With the 2025 update, the Civic lineup includes:
- LX (sedan only)
- Sport
- Sport Hybrid
- Sport Touring
(The Civic Si sedan and Civic Type R hatchback remain unaffected by changes for the 2025 model year). The entry-level LX and Sport models utilize a new 2.0-liter I-4 engine paired with a retuned CVT. Notably, power output slightly decreases from 158 hp and 138 lb-ft of torque to 150 hp and 133 lb-ft, although these power peaks occur lower in the rev range. Honda has eliminated the manual option for the Civic Sport hatchback, with the hybrids also lacking a manual transmission, leaving the sportier Civic Si and Type R models as the only manual-shift options available.
The Sport Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid models feature a hybrid setup shared with other popular Honda models, combining a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a significant primary electric drive motor and a smaller starter-generator. The large motor is responsible for most of the Civic’s propulsion, with the gas engine primarily acting as a generator. At higher speeds, the gas engine briefly assists the electric drive motor to enhance performance. This hybrid powertrain, delivering 200 hp and 232 lb-ft, surpasses the previous turbocharged I-4 engine’s output of 180 hp and 177 lb-ft.
What’s the Fuel Economy Story?
Fuel economy sees notable improvements. The gas-only LX and Sport models experience enhanced efficiency, with the LX sedan achieving 32 mpg city, 41 mpg highway, and 36 mpg combined—an increase of 1 mpg in all categories. Similarly, the Civic Sport sedan achieves 31 mpg city, 39 mpg highway, and 34 mpg combined, while the hatchback lifts its numbers to 30 mpg city, 38 mpg highway, and 34 mpg combined.
Conversely, both the 2025 Honda Civic Sport Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid sedan models excel, boasting ratings of 50 mpg city, 47 mpg highway, and 49 mpg combined per Honda’s estimates. The hatchback variants achieve a city mpg of 50 but reflect lower highway efficiency at 45 mpg, resulting in a combined rating of 48 mpg. While Toyota’s Corolla Hybrid can reach up to 53 mpg city, its performance in similarly equipped models lags behind the Civic’s superior power figures.
And How About Them Prices?
Prices for the 2025 Civic sedan models see only modest increases despite enhancements. For instance, the 2025 Civic LX sedan starts at $25,345, merely $300 more than the previous year, while the Sport incurs a $700 increase to $27,345. Notably, the Sport Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid models present intriguing pricing, costing $29,845 and $32,845 respectively, reflecting a reasonable premium over older models.
Although Honda’s pricing remains competitive, rivals like Toyota and Hyundai offer lower-priced alternatives, exemplified by the Corolla LE at $23,145 and the Elantra sedan beginning at $22,775. Nevertheless, the Civic’s previous dominance in the compact segment suggests it will continue leading with impressive driving dynamics, an elegant interior, and refined build quality.
The 2025 Honda Civic sedan is available now, with hybrid variants rolling out to dealerships shortly. The hatchback models will be released later this summer. Further updates will be provided as information becomes available.
