2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid Compact SUV Review

2025 Mazda CX-50 Overview

The newly-updated Mazda CX-50’s tweaks are luckily not too much to ruin its handsome looks and compact profile. The design has barely been tweaked, but times are indeed changing and there’s a growing market for hybrids now, so Mazda has given this crossover a new hybrid powertrain. It sits in the middle of the lineup in terms of power, but can stretch up to 100 miles further in range over its gas siblings. Here are specs, details, and pricing for the 2025 Mazda CX-50 compact SUV.

New 2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid

Mazda has made some tweaks to the existing two powertrain options for the CX-50 for the 2025 model year, but we’ll start with the new addition of a third powertrain setup that’s a hybrid available in Preferred, Premium, and Premium Plus trims. The hybrid powertrain is actually derived from its Japanese competitor Toyota, which lent Mazda its Toyota Hybrid System technology. It features three electric motors paired with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an eCVT that generates 219 horsepower and 163 lb-ft of torque. It features eAWD, which means the rear-mounted motor is what enables all-wheel drive. The hybrid CX-50 can also tow up to 1,500 pounds, and returns an estimated 38 mpg combined. There is some impact on cargo space to accommodate the hybrid battery pack.

The 2025 Mazda CX-50 Hybrid Preferred gets unique black 17-inch wheels, an 8-speaker audio setup, wireless phone charger, power liftgate, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, central 10.25-inch screen, and a 7-inch instrument panel, keyless entry, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, four USB-C ports, rear air vents, and Alexa Built-In hands-free voice control. The CX-50 Hybrid Premium adds black roof rails and exhaust pipes, powered panoramic moonroof, 12-speaker Bose audio, radar cruise control, speed limit assist, and traffic sign recognition. Premium Plus gets unique upgraded 19-inch machine-polished wheels, highlighted roof rails and exhaust, power-folding side mirrors, ventilated front seats with 6-way passenger power adjustment, contrasted camel stitching over the black interior, and a windshield active driving display.

2025 Mazda CX-50 2.5 S

The base gas-only CX-50 crossover gets a slightly updated 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder, linked to a six-speed automatic, which all delivers 187 hp and 185 lb-ft through standard all-wheel drive. However, the engine has seen the CX-50’s efficiency improve by one mpg in each category, now hitting an estimated 25 city, 31 highway, and 28 combined mpg. This powertrain is capable of towing up to 2,000 pounds, and all CX-50 models come with drive selection including Sport, Off-Road, and Towing modes.

The CX-50 2.5 S Select trim gets its own 17-inch black metallic alloy wheels, a rear roof spoiler, roof rails, dual exhaust, rain-sensing wipers, Alexa Built-in, a 10.25-inch center screen, 8-speaker audio setup, keyless entry, dual-zone climate control with rear vents as well, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a leather and leatherette appointed interior with LED lighting. Safety features include rear seat alert, smart braking for nighttime pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, rear cross traffic alert, and driver attention alert.

The CX-50 2.5 S Preferred trim upgrades to heated side mirrors and windshield wipers, programmable power rear liftgate, eight-way adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seating, and now gets wireless phone charging. The Premium trim goes further with radar cruise control upgrade, speed limit assist, traffic sign recognition, power panoramic moonroof, and the Bose 12-speaker setup. Premium Plus models get nice 20-inch black metallic wheels, ventilated front seating, six-way adjustable passenger seat, dimming rear-view mirror, and the active driving display on the windshield.

2025 Mazda CX-50 2.5 Turbo

The most powerful CX-50 models get a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder good for 256 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel, linked to a six-speed auto with steering-mounted paddle shifter control. Towing capacity is upgraded to 3,500 pounds, and all Turbo trims will get bigger exhaust outlets, an LED taillight upgrade, and adaptive and auto-leveling LED headlights. A special CX-50 2.5 Turbo Meridian Edition offers more “all-terrain performance and styling” including 18-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain rubber, new side rockers, hood graphics, and more available outdoor accessories. It also gets heated and ventilated front seating, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, off-road mapping navigation guidance, and over-the-air update capability.

The “regular” 2.5 Turbo Premium trim gets 20-inch black metallic machined wheels, head-up active driving display, and so-called Cruising and Traffic Support tech that includes highway speed lane centering, adaptive cruise control, and traffic sign recognition. The Premium Plus models add frameless auto-dimming rearview and driver’s side mirrors, a 360-degree view on the display options, parking sensors and emergency lane keep, blind spot assist, and front cross traffic alert.
