The 2025 BMW M5 sedan has made its grand entrance, equipped with a charging port. Some enthusiasts may have never anticipated a high-performance sedan like the M5 going hybrid, yet here we are. This transition is undoubtedly polarizing; however, the hybrid powertrain renders the 2025 BMW M5 the most robust version yet.
BMW M Hybrid System Powered by a V-8
The previous iteration of the M5 was outfitted with a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine, and the new 2025 M5 continues this tradition. In an era where hybrid models often feature downsized engines, the new BMW M5 retains its potent V-8 engine.
The 2025 M5 utilizes the same S68B44T0 engine that is present in other current BMW models featuring a V-8, but it is tuned to deliver an impressive 577 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. The engine also revs high, showcasing its capability with a redline at 7,200 rpm.
Hybrid Components and Power Output
As expected, the additional power in the M5 comes from its M Hybrid system. A synchronous electric motor incorporated within the eight-speed transmission contributes 192 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque, with torque potentially reaching 332 lb-ft through BMW’s patented “pre-gearing stage” process.
The electric motor draws its energy from a 14.8-kWh battery pack managed by the BMW “Combined Charging Unit.” This unit optimizes power distribution to the motor and charges the battery while also acting as a transformer for the 12-volt system. Notably, it features predictive heat management, which calculates the best temperature for battery efficiency based on various external conditions.
The battery allows for a limited all-electric range of about 25 miles, suitable for quiet neighborhood outings or entering EV-only zones emerging in Europe.
When combined with the V-8 engine, the total system output becomes a staggering 717 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque, enabling the M5 sedan to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in a swift 3.4 seconds. Furthermore, it achieves a top speed of 190 mph with the optional M Driver’s Package, while the standard limit is 155 mph. Power is expertly distributed to all four wheels through BMW’s M xDrive all-wheel drive system, managed by the Active M Differential.
Performance and Weight Considerations
For those interested in drifting, the M5 includes a two-wheel-drive mode that can be activated when the driver disables stability control, similar to the current M3 and M4 models. However, potential buyers should be aware that the hybrid system has increased the overall weight of the M5 to around 5,400 pounds. This weight is approximately 1,100 pounds heavier than the last standard M5 model and 1,300 pounds heavier than the 2022 M5 CS. Consequently, this weight gain results in a power-to-weight ratio that is less favorable compared to its predecessors.
Striking Exterior Design
The front of the M5 immediately captures attention with its large air dam that slants forward, creating a bold statement. The LED headlights provide a fierce look, while the kidney grilles are flared yet not overly aggressive, maintaining a classic M aesthetic. The vehicle’s dimensions have grown, making the M5 wider; it features 20-inch front wheels and 21-inch rear wheels for enhanced stability and performance.
At the rear, the design includes a diffuser and quad exhaust tips, complemented by sleek taillights that enhance the chiseled look of the back end. An optional carbon fiber decklid spoiler adds a touch of elegance and sportiness.
Interior Features and Technology
In addition to performance, the BMW M5 is renowned for its luxurious interior. This new iteration carries on that legacy with premium leather upholstery and comfortable bucket seats. The flat-bottom steering wheel is equipped with various buttons for easy access to different driving modes.
The iDrive controller remains a centerpiece of the center console for intuitive navigation through the updated BMW OS 8.5. Moreover, the 2025 M5 includes the AirConsole service, offering a selection of casual games for entertainment while waiting at a charging station. If gaming is not of interest, occupants can stream services such as YouTube while parked.
