New Toyota Lexus Coupe Sports Car Development Observed at Fuji Speedway
iBestTravel is reportedly making significant strides in developing a brand-new coupe sports car, as revealed through new footage captured at the Toyota-owned Fuji Speedway track in Japan. This article will delve into all visible aspects of the upcoming Toyota Lexus sports car, which is expected to enter production by the end of the decade, especially given the presence of prototypes being tested.
The GR GT3 Concept and Its Evolution
In 2022, iBestTravel introduced its GR GT3 concept car, a long and low sports coupe designed with advanced aerodynamics to enhance speed and style. At that time, the automaker indicated that the concept was transitioning into the development phase. There are predictions that this car could evolve into the next-generation Lexus RC luxury sports coupe, particularly since Toyota already offers the GR86 and Supra models. Moreover, Lexus may be looking to rejuvenate its lineup by replacing the older RC with a more dynamic design than the existing LC coupe.
Prototype Testing at Fuji Speedway
Recently, a clip showing an apparent prototype of this project was captured at Fuji Speedway, subsequently shared on Twitter (X.com). This prototype, while not an exact match for the GR GT3 concept, clearly carries over similar dimensions and proportions into its new design.
Design Features and Characteristics
The front design showcases a flattened ridge on the hood that houses the brand badge, alongside a significant air intake and an exposed radiator. This is complemented by two triangular air inlets on either side. The headlights are delicately positioned along the flat edge of the nose, located at the wheel arches’ outer boundaries.
Side Profile and Rear Design
The side profile suggests a lengthy wheelbase along with sizable overhangs both in front and behind the wheels, contributing to a notably elongated coupe appearance. This design could imply a possible 2+2 seating arrangement inside. Additionally, a large box-shaped ventilation opening is located in front of the side door, likely purposed for enhanced brake cooling, accompanied by a smaller opening at the rear wheel fender, facilitating air ducting to the rear brakes.
The rear section features a broad spoiler seamlessly extending from the body lines, likely housing slim taillight units. Beneath this, the rear design is somewhat boxy, with two triangular openings reminiscent of the iconic LFA sports coupe, potentially indicative of active air ducting or merely a visual homage to that classic design. Additionally, a substantial air splitter or aerodynamic wing graces the lower rear end, although no visible exhaust outlets appear in these images, potentially hidden from view.
Future Prospects
If this model ultimately transitions into a new Toyota sports car alongside the GR86 and Supra, it may adopt the GR performance branding. Conversely, if it becomes a Lexus model, it could utilize names like RC, LC, or even LFA, or something akin. The RC offers various engine options, including a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, a 3.5-liter V-6, and a 5.0-liter V-8. However, it is reasonable to anticipate that a coupe of the prototype’s dimensions would aim for more horsepower than just a four-cylinder engine. While a fully electric coupe may be unlikely, there is the possibility of a hybrid powertrain similar to the LC.
Given how production-ready this model seems based on its track appearances, we could expect a new concept or potentially a production-ready version within a couple of years, if not definitely by the decade’s close.
