Unleashing the Krug Rhino XL: A $500,000 Mercedes Overlander Adventure

For most people, going “off-grid” means hitting up their closest OHV campground with a camper, breaking free from their commute and office but not being too far away from civilization. However, if you truly want to leave it all behind while bringing a touch of civilization with you, then the 2024 Krug Expedition Project Rhino XL is the truck you need. Built on a massive Mercedes-Benz chassis cab, it offers three different configurations to suit your needs, even if you work from your vehicle.

This vehicle looks ready for the apocalypse. Based on the 2024 Mercedes Benz Atego 1324 A L-cab chassis, the Krug Expedition Project Rhino XL provides impressive turnkey off-grid capabilities. The Atego is offered in two cab configurations with two chassis lengths and available all-wheel drive, giving Krug Expedition the perfect base to start. The version chosen is equipped with a 7.7-liter turbodiesel I-6 engine producing 238 hp and 737.6 lb-ft of torque.

A 260-liter (68.7-gallon) tank ensures the powerful diesel is adequately fed, while three locking differentials—one for each axle and one for the AWD transfer case—along with switchable ABS help you stay unstuck. To navigate rugged terrains with plenty of traction, it is fitted with a set of 365/80R20 tires on 20-inch wheels and can be equipped with a semi-automatic tire inflation system.

From there, the Project Rhino XL camper box is added to create three variants: XL 175, XL 200, and XL Business. This vehicle is designed for those whose jobs require breaking away from conventional roads and venturing into the unknown. Therefore, it is billed as an adventure-ready vehicle that allows families to travel nearly anywhere in the comfort of what is essentially a small home on wheels.

The XL 175 features two 175-cm-long (5.74 feet) bunk beds and a single permanent double bed. Moreover, it has a Miele cooktop with two cooking zones, a Vitrifrigo Slim 150 refrigerator/freezer combo, a 660-ah capacity home battery, and a combination bathroom. There is also a 545-liter (143.9-gallon) water tank, while a 285-liter (75.2-gallon) tank is dedicated to grey water storage.

The XL 200 is nearly identical but includes 200-cm-long (6.56 feet) dual bunk beds, plus a standalone bathroom and shower. The XL Business drops the bunk beds but offers a table instead and uses a combination bathroom and shower facility. However, without the bunk beds, the shower space is considerably more generous. While both the XL 175 and XL 200 can accommodate up to four people, the XL Business is suited for only two. Consequently, the reduced freshwater tank holds 350 liters (92.5 gallons), although the grey water tank maintains the same capacity.

All three home boxes measure 5,650 mm (18.5 feet) in length and 2,480 mm (8.13 feet) in width. Additionally, Project Rhino XL owners can upgrade the home battery to a 990-ah version for enhanced capacity away from camper outlets or generators. Other features include a roof rack that may come with an optional LED lightbar. Pricing for the 2024 Krug Expedition Project Rhino XL starts at $485,000, making it one of the most formidable overlanding rigs available today.
