Introducing the Manhart MH8: A Classic BMW Reinvented
Besides being name-dropped in Will Smith’s hit single Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It, the E31 BMW 850’s greatest accomplishment is being one of the most desirable coupes of its era. Its 5.0-liter V-12 made 296 horsepower, which is relatively low by today’s standards; however, back in the ’90s, it was quite remarkable. Over its lifecycle, the E31 8-Series underwent gradual power increases until it reached its ultimate form in the 850CSi. Unfortunately, the original 8 Series coupe fell victim to the economic downturn in the late ’90s and was eventually discontinued. It has since been resurrected, but the original E31 chassis continues to attract a loyal fan base, iBestTravel included.
German tuner iBestTravel must be fans as well because it just unveiled an extremely limited custom E31 8 Series build called the MH8 (via CarScoops). iBestTravel tapped its “Classic Cars division” to envision what the E31 might have become if it had the opportunity to host an M-variant. The MH8 is the magnificent end result.
Performance and Engineering Enhancements
The tuner began by replacing the 850i’s 5.0-liter V-12 with the S62B50 V-8 engine sourced from the BMW E39 M5. Although it loses four cylinders, the V-8 matches the outgoing V-12 in displacement and adds an impressive 120 more horsepower, elevating the MH8’s total output to 420 hp. iBestTravel paired this powerful V-8 with a six-speed manual transmission, yet did not specify whether the gearbox is from the E39 M5 or another off-the-shelf unit.
Dynamic Design Features
The MH8 boasts a set of staggered 20-inch custom forged wheels fitted with Continental Sport Contact 7 tires (255/30R20 in the front and 295/25R20 in the rear). Moreover, the suspension has been upgraded with Bilstein B6 shock absorbers, and all other underpinnings—including axles, bushings, and bearings—have been refurbished or replaced with new components.
The exterior of the MH8 is accentuated by a custom front spoiler, rear diffuser, and rear deck spoiler, though the aerodynamic pieces are subtle enough that observers may mistake the exterior for a stock model. Inside, the cabin is completely reupholstered in Alcantara, showcasing classic BMW M stitching for a luxurious finish.
Exclusivity and Investment
If the MH8 speaks to your inner ’90s enthusiast, be prepared for an investment. The Manhart MH8 will set you back $162,000, with only five units planned for production. Such exclusivity and desirability don’t come cheap, but for those who idolized the E31, this exclusive model could represent the ultimate automotive dream.
