As Honda prepares for the return of the historic Prelude nameplate, expected to be released as a hybrid coupe, we’ve closely examined the stylish concept car showcased at the Long Beach Grand Prix. This low-slung two-door compact offers a glimpse into what enthusiasts can expect from the upcoming model.
The new red hue closely resembles the Rallye Red paint available on the sporty Honda Civic Si and the high-performance Civic Type R, highlighting the coupe’s athletic aspirations.
Under the bright lights of the convention center, the Prelude’s carbon fiber accents stand out prominently against the red paint. The front splitter, side skirts, rear diffuser, side mirrors, roof, and spoiler appear to be constructed from this lightweight material. Although it is unlikely that the production version will feature carbon fiber, its use in the concept highlights the coupe’s sporty elements.
Other similarities between this red Prelude and the white concept seen at the LA Auto Show include the presence of black 20-inch wheels. Additionally, vertical blue stripes on both bumper ends signify the Prelude’s hybrid designation. However, neither model has a fully finished interior at this stage.
One major difference between these two concepts is related to their brake calipers. The Long Beach model features red calipers that match its body color, while the LA Auto Show version showcases blue calipers harmonious with its exterior stripes. Nevertheless, both models display white Prelude branding on the Brembo-sourced calipers.
While specific details about the Prelude’s powertrain remain scarce, it is anticipated to utilize a variant of the Civic Hybrid’s setup, adapted from the Accord sedan. It is expected to deliver approximately 181 hp and 232 lb-ft of torque. There is speculation that Honda may unveil the production version of the Prelude by the end of 2024, leaving enthusiasts eager to see what performance specifications it may hold. Excitement surrounds the possibilities of this new hybrid coupe.
