Last year, Stellantis made a significant impression with the concept version of the all-electric Ram 1500 REV pickup truck and followed it up with the production models of the range-extender 1500 RamCharger. While it may seem that electrified Ram products are leaning towards the conventional, the new 2024 Ram ProMaster electric van challenges that notion. Notably, it resembles a standard Ram ProMaster cargo van from the exterior. However, could the ProMaster EV offer something genuinely exciting?
Design and Market Positioning
In the commercial van sector, aesthetics take a back seat to functionality. The ProMaster EV’s design similarity to its gas-powered counterparts is typical in this segment. Examples include Ford’s e-Transit and the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, both of which also mirror their internal-combustion engine (ICE) models. Rivan’s electric delivery van, now expanding its market, stands out for its more innovative appearance compared to its peers.
Efficiency and Performance
What truly matters in this landscape are operating costs. Electric vans like the ProMaster EV hold the potential to significantly cut down a fleet’s overhead. The ProMaster EV is powered by a front-mounted electric motor, providing 268 horsepower and 302 lb-ft of torque, mirroring the powertrain of its gas variants while delivering notably higher torque. Available in two body styles, both maintaining a high roof and 159-inch wheelbase, the ProMaster EV offers a 12-foot cargo length, along with a 13-foot option for increased usability. Currently, Ram is focusing on a commercial delivery variant which features a cargo capacity of 524 cubic feet and a maximum payload capacity of 2,030 pounds in the delivery model, escalating to 3,020 pounds for cargo configurations.
Safety Features
In terms of safety, the ProMaster EV comes equipped with full-speed forward collision warning, crosswind assistance, automatic high beam controls, LED headlights, and post-collision braking as standard features. Optional enhancements include adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and Active Driving Assist (SAE Level 2 autonomy). Additional conveniences such as a wireless phone charger, a 115-volt power outlet, and numerous USB ports are also available.
