The New Rivian R3 Electric SUV and High-Performance R3X Variant
Well, that was quite the surprise. Just after unveiling all the details on the 2026 Rivian R2 all-electric SUV, which slots under the R1S, Rivian decided showing off one new vehicle wasn’t enough. What was revealed was another, even smaller vehicle, the compact electric R3 SUV. Moreover, they also introduced a high-performance off-road variant called the Rivian R3X.
Introducing the Rivian R3
The R3 is being touted as an even smaller SUV than the R2, with a 110-inch wheelbase compared to the R2’s 115-inch one. Despite its smaller size, the R3 will come packed with many of the same features as the R2, such as dual glove boxes and a door-mounted flashlight, albeit with a much shorter cargo area. Essentially, the R3 is a shorter version of the R2, but there are key differences in their operations.
The R3 Motor and Battery Offerings
First, let’s look at their similarities. The R3 will come with two battery sizes. The largest pack will deliver “over 300 miles of range” across three drivetrain configurations. Furthermore, Rivian claims a 0-60 mph time of under three seconds, but expect that speed only from the triple-motor AWD version, which features two motors driving the rear wheels and a single motor for the front. For those seeking less performance, there will also be a dual-motor AWD and a single-motor RWD option available.
Notably, the battery pack will be structural to the R3, utilizing all-new 4695 round cells. The vehicle will adopt Tesla’s NACS as the native charging standard, with compatibility for CCS through an adapter. Conversely, larger Rivian models, like the R1T and R1S, employ a J1772-CCS port. Consequently, this could be the first Rivian equipped with the NACS port as standard. On the other hand, the Rivian R3 will boast the capability of charging from 10 to 80 percent in under 30 minutes via DC fast charging.
Interior Space and Autonomous Capabilities
The R3 will include some self-driving capabilities, much like its larger counterparts. It will utilize the same new “perception stack” as the R2, featuring 11 cameras and five radars for a comprehensive understanding of its driving environment. Additionally, a powerful computer platform will “dramatically” enhance its autonomous functionalities, though further specifics weren’t provided.
As a compact SUV, the R3 comfortably seats five, with two in front and three in its foldable second-row bench. All seats can fold flat, creating ample space for camper-style sleeping arrangements. Cargo space is generous for an SUV of its size, especially with the addition of a frunk located under the hood.
Furthermore, the R3’s rear glass can open independently of the main liftgate, providing quick access and versatility for transporting longer items without the need for securing the hatch with cords.
The driving experience in the R3 will mirror that of the R2, featuring a new three-spoke steering wheel design with integrated haptic control dials at the nine and three o’clock positions. A digital instrument panel and an infotainment screen complete the interior, providing a seamless and modern user experience.
The Rivian R3X
In addition to the R3, Rivian announced a high-performance variant known as the R3X. Unlike its civilian counterpart, the R3X features a wider stance that enhances its “rally-inspired” performance, aided by a wider wheel and tire package. It sits higher, and will come standard with the tri-motor AWD drivetrain. According to Rivian, the R3X aims to deliver maximum performance and added driving fun. The interior draws similarities to the R3 but incorporates a “rugged playful” theme with unique materials.
Although pricing and availability details remain unclear, it has been communicated that the R3 will be cheaper than the R2 due to its smaller size. If the R2 commences at $45,000, expect the R3’s pricing to fall within the high $30,000 to low $40,000 range. Rivian continues to promise a more affordable entry into all-electric vehicle ownership with the R2 and R3. The R3X, as a performance variant, will likely command a premium price point. Lastly, Rivian indicated that R3 deliveries will initiate after those for the R2, which are anticipated to start in the first half of 2026.
