First Look at the BMW Vision Neue Klasse X: A Game-Changing Electric SUV

BMW Vision Neue Klasse X Concept Overview

The BMW Vision Neue Klasse concept is a remarkable vehicle, hinting at BMW’s upcoming generation of electric vehicles (EVs) that will embody the sporty spirit of their famed “Ultimate Driving Machine” legacy. Particularly noteworthy, the Vision Neue Klasse X concept showcases the anticipated lineup of electric-powered BMW SUVs, a segment where automakers, including BMW, are currently generating substantial revenue.

Since the debut of the original X5 in 1999, BMW has sold over 12 million X-badged SUVs. Currently, midsize SUVs are among the most sought-after vehicles globally, making it crucial for BMW to initiate production of the Neue Klasse X at its Debrecen plant in Hungary by 2025, before rolling out the Neue Klasse sedan.

Design and Features of the Neue Klasse X

How closely will the production Neue Klasse X resemble this concept model? “My mother won’t see the difference,” remarks Kai Langer, head of BMW i Design. Although the concept features slim pillars and an airy glass roof that wouldn’t meet crash test standards, production models will be more robust. However, the characteristics present in the concept, such as the front and rear bumpers, will translate into the production version, which is expected to debut late next year.

Recent BMW designs have sometimes been criticized for excessive ornamentation. In contrast, the Vision Neue Klasse X seems cleaner and more assured, showcasing muscular fenders and a concave bodyside accentuated by a prominent character line. This design facilitates enhanced visibility due to the low beltline, promising excellent all-around sightlines despite thicker crash safety pillars.

Interior and Technology Innovations

The production Neue Klasse X will feature a stylish rendition of the iconic double kidney grille, complete with an illuminated frame, which is both bold and unobtrusive. The grille’s long, slim profile pays homage to the original 1960s Neue Klasse cars.

Enhanced rear lighting features large red graphics integrated into the bodywork, contributing to the vehicle’s modern aesthetic. This cohesive design ties together elements such as the dip in the spoiler above the rear window, creating a seamless visual flow.

In the interior, while the production model will lack the plush back seat of the concept, it will provide an environment featuring premium materials, including recycled woven textiles. The dashboard will be dominated by a striking landscape touchscreen that offers a contemporary design and intuitive user experience.

Future Technologies in the Neue Klasse X

The Neue Klasse X will debut BMW’s innovative “New iDrive,” foregoing the traditional iDrive controller. This reimagined interface will be complemented by physical controls where necessary, providing a balance between digital and tactile user experiences.

Moreover, the innovative software tailored for the Neue Klasse EVs will complement powerful hardware, featuring advanced electronic control units (ECUs) designed to enable high-caliber performance and increased automation capabilities, including Level 2 and Level 3 autonomous driving. Such advancements in technology highlight BMW’s commitment to combining performance with cutting-edge innovation.

With a new powertrain architecture anticipated to support multiple e-motors, the Neue Klasse’s specifications promise faster charging times and augmented battery capacity, thus enhancing driving range.
