The End of the Ram 1500 Classic

Despite all the pageantry and spectacle of Stellantis’ “Last Call” campaign to send off the Hemi V-8 across its brands last year, the iconic V-8 didn’t actually go anywhere. While it’s true you can’t buy a new Charger or Challenger with a Hemi anymore, the engine is still in various Dodge and Ram products.

What is the Ram 1500 Classic?

The Hemi was still hiding out under the hood of the Ram 1500 Classic. For those unfamiliar with this model, the Classic is essentially the previous-generation Ram 1500 that originally launched in 2009, which Ram markets as a lower-cost alternative to the newer DT-generation model dating back to 2018.

Longevity of the Ram 1500 Classic

Although it seems logical to offer a less expensive, older model alongside a newer version—a strategy previously attempted by various manufacturers like Chevy and Jeep—we’re puzzled by the longevity of the Ram 1500 Classic. Previous Classic-type models typically lasted only a year or two, but the Ram Classic has remained available for an extended period. However, according to Car and Driver, this era is coming to an end. A Ram official confirmed that the 1500 Classic will be discontinued after the 2024 model year.

Future of the Hemi V-8

With the Classic model phased out, so is the opportunity to acquire a new Ram equipped with a Hemi V-8. All 2025 model-year DT models will be powered by the new 3.0-liter Hurricane twin-turbo I-6 or the well-established 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6. However, if you think the Hemi could be easily eliminated, think again.

You can still purchase a Dodge Durango with the Hemi, alongside Jeep’s Grand Cherokee and Wagoneer models that also offer this powerful engine. Moreover, the Hemi is returning in the second Final Edition Wrangler 392 Rubicon—yes, that indicates two Final Editions released consecutively. While the second release may be deemed the ultimate version, with Jeep previously reversing its decision to end production post-2024, it remains uncertain whether they will change their course again next year. Regardless, the Hemi V-8 continues to thrive in Stellantis’ U.S. lineups, despite its absence from certain prominent products associated with it over the years. The Ram 1500 Classic, however, is certainly no longer among them.
