2026 Honda Prelude Excludes Manual Transmission Feature

The 2026 Honda Prelude: What to Expect

It was fun to speculate, but a top Honda executive confirms what we knew deep down inside: the new 2026 Honda Prelude sports coupe will not have a manual transmission.

Honda is bringing back the coupe that was discontinued in 2001 at the end of its fifth generation. It will go into production next year as a 2026 model. The coupe will feature the same hybrid powertrain located in the updated 2025 Honda Civic lineup, which has received positive feedback for its performance. Notably, it will not include a manual transmission, as confirmed by Honda’s global officer in charge of electrification, Shinji Aoyama.

However, the Prelude will not simply mimic the Civic. Designed to be sporty, the Prelude will feature unique engineering for a more engaging driving experience. Drivers will feel and hear the downshifts, although it will still utilize an automatic transmission paired with Honda’s powerful 200-hp 2.0-liter I-4 and dual motor hybrid system.

Prelude Concept Generated Excitement

Our excitement heightened with Honda’s intentions showcased through a sleek concept at Japan’s Mobility Show (formerly the Tokyo Auto Show) in October 2023. This revival continues Honda’s trend of restoring beloved nameplates, following the reintroduction of the Honda Passport and the Acura Integra.

In discussing the Prelude concept, Honda’s global president and CEO Toshihiro Mibe stated, “Honda has always been committed to creating sporty vehicles. The word ‘prelude’ signifies an ‘introductory or preceding performance.’ This model will be the beginning of our future models inheriting the joy of driving into a fully electrified future, embodying Honda’s unalterable sports mindset.”

An updated version of the Prelude concept for Europe was presented in July at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Manual Transmission Rumors

Since then, speculations regarding a stick-shift hybrid Prelude have circulated widely. However, these claims have proven difficult to believe from a mechanical standpoint.

For enthusiasts lamenting the decline of manual transmissions in the wake of electric vehicles, there is hope. In January, Honda engineers previewed the 0 Series family of dedicated electric vehicles set to launch in 2026, and mentioned the development of a synthetic manual transmission for future EVs—though production decisions are still pending.

Additionally, Honda is developing a new digital UX system that allows drivers to choose the iconic vehicle sounds they wish to experience during acceleration and gear shifts. However, this innovation may not materialize until the second-generation 0 Series, which is expected to be manufactured in Canada starting in 2028.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 features a simulated automatic transmission, while Toyota’s Lexus UX300e EV offers a fake manual transmission with a clutch pedal, six-speed shifter, and corresponding artificial engine noise.
