The Cayman offers just about the most perfect sports car experience you could hope for. With the engine tucked up tightly behind the seats, its sound filling the cabin, it feels perfectly balanced and in tune with the driver. Small, quick and not terribly practical, the Cayman is the benchmark for what a sports car should be.
The latest iteration of Audi’s cute little sports car gets a little edgier and a little less cute. In the base model, at least, the TT doesn’t seem quite like a true sports car, though. It lacks the quickness and sharpness required for a really exciting driving experience, which makes it more of a nice car for a cruise through countryside. But that’s enough for a lot of folks.
Like other Audis, the TT has a beautiful and highly functional interior. Notice there’s no computer screen in the middle of the dash. That’s because the gauge cluster is itself a computer screen that handles all the functions you’d normally look for there.
You can order your 911 with three different roof options. There’s the hardtop, of course, then the convertible. For those who’d like something in between there’s this lovely looking choice, the Targa. In good weather, just the middle portion of the roof stows away to give you something like an extra-huge sunroof. What’s the point? It looks amazing. That’s the point.
One downside is wind noise. The air rushing across that big opening adds a few extra ruffles to the usual open-top car noises. To me, the looks make up for the noise and besides, you’re driving a 911.
This new Mercedes-Benz sports car is designed to show off the capability of the automaker’s legendary AMG performance division. The 503-horsepower GT-S is often touted as an alternative to the 911, which I suppose it is, but the GT-S has a very different feel. For one thing, it carries its engine in front of, rather than behind, the occupants which imparts a different sense of balance.
This AMG GT-S is best enjoyed in Sport-Plus or Race mode, which makes it feel like a clenched fist of a car, ready for violence at any moment. The angry, growling engine sound alone is worth turning the Drive Mode knob for. But this Mercedes doesn’t feel as intuitive and as precisely connected to the driver as the Porsche does.
The latest version of the Miata has a nice looking, more sophisticated, design inside and out. It is also a terrific car to drive, as Miatas have always been. It feels light, responsive, intuitive, direct, and more than quick enough to be plenty of fun. In this latest iteration, Mazda engineers have tuned out some of the frantic edginess that, in past versions, might have made the idea of a long drive in the Miata a little daunting. Some people might miss the fact that the steering and suspension now lack that playful edge.
The new Miata has a nicely functional interior although not everyone will love the screen’s twisty-knob interface, an idea borrowed from luxury cars. The best thing is the stereo speakers in the headrests, another luxury concept brought to this lower-cost model. It makes top-down stereo listening on the highway a meaningful reality. And that top, by the way, can be raised and lowered with just one hand without leaving the driver’s seat. That’s a neat trick.
