Stephen Shore’s Photographic Journey at Andy Warhol’s Factory
At just 17, photographer Stephen Shore gained an unprecedented opportunity to document the dynamic atmosphere within Andy Warhol’s Factory. This iconic space served as a creative hub for artists, musicians, and visionaries during the 1960s.
From 1965 to 1967, Shore photographed Warhol and his followers as they worked and partied around New York.Renowned artists like Yoko Ono (seen here) and Marcel Duchamp passed through the Factory.Warhol was frequently in the company of musicians like the Velvet Underground. (He’s seen here with singer Lou Reed.)My guess is that it helped him in his work to have people around, to have these other activities around him, Shore writes.According to Shore, Warhol was “very open and unaffected” when they spoke.I think I learned by observing — not observing him in order to learn, just by being exposed to the decisions and the actions he was making, Shore writes.By the end of my stay at the Factory, I found that just my contact with, and observation of, Andy led me to think differently about my function as an artist.Factory: Andy Warhol is out now.
