Fans returned to the major course after being unable to attend last year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Moreover, starting in his 112th major, Mickelson proved he was still one of the best players in the world, outplaying his younger competitors to claim his sixth major trophy.
In winning at age 50, Mickelson surpassed the record previously held by Julius Boros, who won the PGA Championship in 1968 at age 48.
