First impressions: When they met, Kim and Tom were both Americans in their early 20s on backpacking vacations in Europe. When Kim first saw Tom, she thought he was “really cute.” Tom deliberately got in the elevator to speak to “this striking woman in a dress.”

Getting noticed: The following day, Kim and Tom separated and had no way to contact each other. Desperate to track Kim down, Tom volunteered to help a street performer at Munich’s Marienplatz, a central plaza in the city.
