Experience the World’s Most Isolated Disco Adventure

Detour Discotheque: Experience a Unique Nightlife Adventure in Iceland

A guy wearing steampunk goggles has just taken up a central spot on the dancefloor with gusto. One woman in dungaree shorts and a man in a bright red bowtie are dancing as if it’s their first-ever club night, compelling everyone nearby to move out of their unpredictable way. Two people have shared passionate kisses, creating an exciting atmosphere that buzzes with energy. Each time the antique, spotlit disco ball revolves, it casts sparkles of light around the hall, igniting the crowd’s enthusiasm.

Unplugged from the Norm

So far, this scene could be from any vibrant disco, yet there’s something strikingly different. Pulling back one of the vintage red drapes, daylight spills in—it’s nearly 11 PM! This unusual sight makes fellow dancers squint and retreat from the brightness. The security team is found watching the DJ sets from the back of the room, subtly validating that this is a scene unlike any other. “It’s nice to see people dancing and not just drunk,” remarks a local.

Welcome to the inaugural Detour Discotheque—a pop-up nightclub bringing joy to incredible locations. The very first destination is Þingeyri, in the stunning Westfjords of Iceland, with a population of roughly 326. With 200 guests arriving for two nights of revelry, local residents are sure to notice the vibrant influx.

The Inspiration Behind the Event

Snow led to this unique venue choice. Editor and DJ Jonny Ensall first visited the village in 2018 while researching a new co-working space, Blábankinn (The Blue Bank). This sparked his interest in how digital nomads could thrive in remote areas. A snowstorm during his trip left him with an unexpected extra night, where he attended the annual Hjónaball—a couple’s dance in the village hall. “The venue had such a special vibe, I knew I had to share it with more people,” he recalls. Thus, the Detour Discotheque concept was born amidst innovative thinking inspired by global changes.

Events That Unite

By the time the event dates arrive in 2022, both nights are sold out. “We held back some tickets, knowing laidback Icelanders often decide last minute,” Jonny explains. The crowd consists of about 60% locals and 40% international visitors. From the outside, the hall appears worn, but stepping inside feels like entering a community-focused Studio 54, with gold tinsel decorations, rustic fairy-lit areas, and vibrant balloons filling the ceiling.

A Musical Journey

The two-night DJ lineup features a blend of soul, Afro, Latin, and retro hits. Jonny and his long-time partner Joss spin tracks reminiscent of their many years performing across various venues, while Saturday night brings excellent guest DJs. Rahaan, from Chicago, plays his first set in Iceland, and rising star Norsicaa shares her dynamic sounds. The highlight, however, comes from local sensation Hermigervill, who electrifies the crowd with his unique live set.

Your Adventurous Icelandic Experience

Detour Discotheque is more than just clubbing; it’s an adventure. The journey to this remote location, coupled with the unique experiences of Icelandic culture, creates lasting memories. From exploring the colorful streets of Reykjavik to savoring local delicacies, adventure awaits at every turn. The views en route to the Westfjords showcase breathtaking landscapes, dotted with dramatic snow-covered cliffs and lush greenery nestled in stark contrast.

Unforgettable Activities in Iceland

A visit to local bakeries introduces lingering flavors through intriguing pastries, while boat excursions seek whales and playful puffins. Additionally, guests enjoy local beers from regional breweries, enhancing this immersive experience. Exploring the Ösvör maritime museum elaborates on the rich fishing history and way of life from previous centuries.

Conclusion: A Unique Community Experience

While all these vivid experiences contribute to one’s travel memories, they intertwine seamlessly into Iceland’s rich cultural fabric. Detour Discotheque 2022 provided a fresh and unique experience, uniting individuals from diverse backgrounds for an extraordinary weekend on the dance floor.

As the final echoes of the music fade and dawn light emerges, revelers gather for one last photo—a moment captured from the DJ booth. With the Northern Lights twinkling above, the unexpected joy of this event lingers on, highlighting that the magic of Detour Discotheque continues as it moves to the Scottish Isle of Coll for its next installment in September 2023.
