How a European Wellness Retreat Transformed My Skepticism

Discover the World of Wellness Retreats

If I had the ability to teleport, I would have an extensive list of places to visit. However, one location that has always intrigued me is a wellness retreat. Despite my perception of wellness travel, I never considered myself the type to be drawn to the serenity and healing that such retreats offer.

Facing Fears and Taking the Plunge

When my friends Lindsey Holland and Jack Mizon launched Marnie Rays, a surf retreat, they described it as a blending of their passions: sport, community, good food, and outdoor living. Although I was thrilled for them, I initially thought it wasn’t for me.

Despite the allure of beautiful villas, stunning swimming lakes, and gastronomic delights, I often felt excluded from activities like yoga, hiking, and surfing due to my size. The idea of slipping into a wetsuit in front of strangers made me anxious, and I found myself retreating further into my comfort zone.

As the start date approached, I remembered a promise to challenge myself and embrace fear. Consequently, I decided to take the leap and book my flights for a wellness retreat, encouraged by the support of my friends.

Arrival and Initial Thoughts

Upon arriving at Faro airport and traveling to Ocean Farm, my feelings of imposter syndrome were quickly replaced by tranquility. The beautiful seven-bedroom villa, complete with a small farm and swimming lake, invited me to unwind. I thought, “I can swim and surf and do yoga with strangers; I can do that.”

Transformative Experiences Await

As the days unfolded, activities I initially dreaded became filled with joy. I realized I could opt for comfort by choosing not to wear a wetsuit and received overwhelming support from fellow guests. Together, we faced the waves of the Atlantic, lending each other a hand as we embraced the chilly waters.

Embracing New Opportunities

Throughout the week, I found strength I didn’t know I had. I carried a surfboard into the ocean, hiked at my own pace, and enjoyed yoga sessions with newfound confidence. The atmosphere was filled with camaraderie, and no one judged my body or my capabilities.

Redefining Wellness

Before this experience, I held an assumption that wellness wasn’t suited for me and was devoid of fun. However, four days in Aljezur allowed me to see wellness as something more than a set of activities; it’s about feeling good and participating in what brings joy and comfort.

Ultimately, this retreat taught me that the journey toward wellness is open to everyone, and it can be tailored to individual comfort levels. Whether it’s soaking in a serene lake or indulging in delightful meals, wellness is about allowing yourself to enjoy the experience.
