L’Observatoire: An Immersive Journey on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express
There’s something otherworldly about travelling by train. It’s romantic, a little retro, and most definitely nostalgic. Consequently, when iBestTravel, the hospitality experts behind one of the grandest train journeys in the world, decided to create a new carriage for the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, careful consideration was given to its story.
Introducing L’Observatoire
Next spring (March 2025), the train will welcome its latest addition, designed in collaboration with renowned French photographer and street artist, JR. Guests will soon have the opportunity to stay in this moving artwork, and the team has several secrets in store.
Details of the Private Carriage
L’Observatoire is the first private carriage on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express designed by an artist, serving as an immersive treasure trove. The attention to detail is astounding. JR has shown his passion for trains since childhood, a fascination sparked by his acclaimed work ‘Women Are Heroes’ (2007). In this project, JR famously adorned trains in Kibera, Nairobi, with large black and white photographs, creating a striking visual narrative.
Art and Inspiration
Within this unique carriage, guests will encounter 9,800 scalloped shapes that enhance the train’s Art Deco design, some hand-painted by skilled craftsmen from Livorno, Italy. For instance, the master bedroom features waves of green leather, artfully reminiscent of trees and nature. Furthermore, two oculus-shaped skylights infuse the space with elegance, equipped with rotating wooden pieces for a charming touch.
Entertainment and Enchantment
JR has instilled a sense of playfulness with fun features like a disco ball and an integrated sophisticated sound system. The curated collection of vinyl tracks adds to the vibrant atmosphere, inviting guests to enjoy music in an enchanting environment. Moreover, a treasure hunt invites guests to discover clues hidden throughout the carriage, enhancing the entire experience.
Craftsmanship and Design
Throughout the corridors, exquisite woodwork and marquetry are adorned with JR’s photographs. Dining in the lounge area becomes a special experience among these remarkable crafts. Collaborating with Atelier Philippe Alleman, new motifs will showcase JR’s reinterpretation of urban landscapes and mountain scenery, evoking the journey through the beautiful Tyrols and Alps.
Micro-Environments and Social Spaces
The interiors of L’Observatoire feature several micro-environments characterized by beautiful French parquetry. From the bedroom and adjoining bathroom to a cozy day bed, each area is thoughtfully designed for comfort and social interaction.
What to Expect During Your Stay
When L’Observatoire joins the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express in March 2025, guests can expect an all-inclusive experience featuring gourmet meals with sommelier-selected wines, 24-hour butler service, and bespoke amenities. Travelers are in for a remarkable journey filled with artistic beauty and whimsical surprises crafted by JR.
