The 2021 Jeep Wrangler: A Comprehensive Overview
The Jeep Wrangler is the ultimate go-anywhere SUV for many off-road adventurers; however, it will soon face stiff new competition from the Ford Bronco. To keep the excitement alive, the Jeep—our 2019 SUV of the Year—will reportedly receive a host of new features across various trim levels for 2021. These enhancements, as reported by various automotive insiders, include more infotainment options, advanced safety features, and upgraded off-road equipment.
More Full-Time 4WD Availability, Some Mojave Love
In previous models, the Sport variant of the Wrangler could only be equipped with a Command-Trac part-time four-wheel-drive system with a two-speed transfer case. Now, however, Jeep is offering the Selec-Trac full-time transfer case as standard on certain higher-end trims, such as the Sahara, and available on the entry-level Sport. This innovative two-speed transfer case proves particularly beneficial for drivers who may not use their vehicles for extreme off-roading, allowing indefinite use of four-wheel drive, even on dry pavement. This system operates almost like an all-wheel-drive setup, automatically transitioning between two- and four-wheel drive as terrain conditions vary.
Command-Trac is the traditional option, meaning that once four-wheel drive is activated, it remains engaged until the driver chooses to disengage it, potentially causing “binding” on high-traction surfaces. In a notable shift, Jeep is now for the first time offering the full-time capabilities on the rugged Rubicon off-road trim. For this model, the Selec-Trac functionality has been incorporated into the sturdier Rock-Trac system, which retains a 4.0:1 low-range crawl ratio.
Moreover, the Rubicon now comes equipped as standard with Off-Road Plus, a feature that empowers drivers to navigate at higher speeds while the locking rear differential is engaged. This system allows for tailored throttle, transmission shift points, and traction control parameters, enhancing the vehicle’s capability on sand or uneven terrains.
The 2021 Wrangler Sahara and Rubicon models will also feature a forward-facing camera system located behind the grille, allowing drivers to better see any potential obstacles in their path. After all, visibility is crucial when navigating tricky trails.
More In-Car Tech for Enhanced Convenience
One step above the base Sport model is the Wrangler Sport S, which now features the previously optional Technology Group package as standard. This package enhances the user experience with a 7.0-inch touchscreen that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, and a high-resolution TFT color display within the gauge cluster, along with SiriusXM and other sought-after features.
Additionally, all Wranglers equipped with the 7.0-inch touchscreen now come with a specialized tire-fill alert system. This innovative feature will honk the horn once when the optimal tire pressure is reached and three times when it is too high or low. This is especially useful for Jeep owners who deflate their tires for off-road adventures and require precise pressure adjustments before heading back on the road.
Engine Configurations: A Familiar Lineup
Engine options for the 2021 Wrangler may sound familiar, featuring Fiat Chrysler’s 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, the recently introduced 3.0-liter diesel V-6, and the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder. However, an interesting change has occurred: the four-cylinder option will no longer offer the eTorque mild-hybrid system. Notably, the 3.6-liter V-6 will still be available with this hybrid technology, while there are plans in the pipeline for an electrified version of the Wrangler.
Diverse Color Palette for 2021
Expect a broad selection of exterior colors for the 2021 Wrangler, including classic shades such as Bright White, Black, Billet Silver, and Firecracker Red. Enthusiasts will also appreciate new color choices like Sarge Green, Snazzberry, and Hydro Blue. As Jeep evolves, some previously available colors will be sadly missed, but the introduction of vibrant new options promises to excite consumers.
