Introducing the New Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer
Update: The full-size 2022 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer have arrived. Learn more about these luxury SUVs below.
Jeep is expanding into the three-row premium SUV market with a diverse range of vehicles under the Wagoneer name. This new lineup includes the 2022 Jeep Wagoneer, expected to start at approximately $60,000, competing against notable rivals such as the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and GMC Yukon. Furthermore, Jeep is also launching the 2022 Grand Wagoneer designed to take on competitors like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator.
Upcoming Variants and Performance Features
Once production stabilizes at the assembly plant in Warren, Michigan, Jeep plans to introduce long-wheelbase versions of both the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. The stretched Wagoneer will compete with the Chevy Suburban, Ford Expedition Max, and GMC Yukon XL, while the Grand Wagoneer will aim for the Escalade ESV and Navigator L. A fully loaded Grand Wagoneer could exceed $100,000, targeting luxury models like the Range Rover. All new models are built on a robust body-on-frame architecture, derived from a modified version of the Ram pickup.
High-Performance Options
Expect some extreme variants in the Wagoneer family. Historically, many Jeep models have Trailhawk versions designed for enhanced off-road capabilities. Additionally, high-performance models such as the Trackhawk may emerge, potentially delivering powerful performance metrics similar to the Ram 1500 TRX, featuring a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 boasting 702 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. This trend hints at a high-performance Grand Wagoneer variant in the future.
Expanding into Premium Territory
This marks a significant expansion for Jeep, venturing into large, full-size SUVs and stepping into the premium automotive sector. The introduction of a third-row seat in the Wagoneer, which was in production from 1962 to 1991, highlights Jeep’s efforts to cater to modern family needs.
Sustainability and Electrification
In addition to conventional powertrains, the Wagoneer family will also offer plug-in hybrid options. This aligns with Jeep’s commitment to electrifying their lineup without compromising off-road capabilities. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is investing $10 billion to introduce electric motors to 30 nameplates, with a notable portion being either hybrids or plug-in hybrids like the Wagoneer.
Challenges Ahead
Ralph Gilles, FCA’s head of design, expressed enthusiasm about elevating the Jeep brand and expanding the lineup. The revival of the Wagoneer carries significant meaning for Jeep enthusiasts and necessitates a new portfolio of vehicles that embodies “American Premium” standards, delivering a unique customer experience and redefining the luxury SUV market.
Market Readiness and Future Prospects
The Wagoneer lineup will not only be available across the United States but also in Canada and Mexico. Jeep is positioned to effectively compete in both mainstream and premium segments.
