Friday Around the Planet: Travel Updates and Inspirations
Welcome to Friday Around the Planet, your go-to source for travel-related news and inspiration you might have missed over the past week.
After a 30-month hiatus, I took my first transatlantic flight back to Europe since the pandemic began. Upon landing in Paris, I ventured down to Bordeaux, the renowned wine region. During my stay, I sampled exquisite red blends and delightful pastries while exploring charming towns such as Saint-Émilion and Cognac, forever linked to its namesake liquor.
Traveling across Europe’s trains and cobblestoned streets felt like reunifying with an old friend, which many travelers are eager to experience this summer. As airlines report solid bookings for June and July, it’s essential to plan accordingly and arrive at the airport with ample time to enjoy a stress-free journey.
Logistics: Planes, Trains, and More
Part of my journey included exploring French bee’s convenient train + air package. This innovative feature allows travelers to manage all their transit needs while promoting sustainable travel across Europe.
COVID-19 Requirements
The European Union announced that starting May 16, masks will no longer be mandatory on flights and public transport. However, it is advisable to keep your mask handy, as certain countries and airlines may still enforce mask-wearing. Always check with your airline and destination prior to your departure.
Moreover, important developments in COVID-19 protocols include Laos reopening its borders to welcome back international tourists.
Healing Through Hiking Post-COVID-19
Richard Collett, six months after recovering from a severe case of COVID-19, embarked on a hike along the UK’s longest national trail. His inspiring 630-mile journey along the South West Coast Path exemplifies the healing power of nature.
However, nature enthusiasts eager to explore Havasu Falls will have to wait until 2023, as the Havasupai Tribal Council announced its lands remain closed for essential repairs and enhancements.
For further hiking inspiration, consider Slovenia’s sustainable Green Capitals route, which traverses three eco-friendly travel hubs or explore these six captivating hikes in the Poconos.

Montréal in Canada is currently showcasing a traveling techno exhibit, detailing the evolution of the techno music scene from Detroit in the 1980s to West Berlin during the Cold War.
Additionally, a new exhibit in Pompeii, titled ‘Art and Sensuality in the Houses of Pompeii’, presents 70 evocative pieces of art representing erotic themes, allowing visitors a unique glimpse into the site’s ancient recreational culture. The exhibition runs until January 2023.
