Discover Unique Hiking Trails with Stunning Lagoon Views in Bora Bora

Exploring the Best Hikes in Bora Bora

Most visitors head to Bora Bora for a blissful tropical island vacation centered around relaxing in an overwater bungalow on the sparkling lagoon. However, you might be surprised to learn that hiking opportunities abound on this beautiful island. Given its small size and lush mountainous terrain, you truly don’t have to venture far to escape civilization. The reward for your efforts is the plethora of different shades of blue visible in one of the world’s most stunning lagoons from a breathtaking viewpoint.

Here are seven of the best and most scenic hikes on Bora Bora.

Faanui Cannons: Easiest Hike to Find

Less than 300m (a quarter of a mile), 10 minutes, moderate

Bora Bora was strategically chosen as a military supply base during WWII. Eight giant cannons were installed high on the hills, some of which are still waiting to be discovered. Hikers who successfully locate these cannons will be rewarded with spectacular views of the iconic lagoon. The trek from the sealed circle island road takes about 10 minutes, and the scenery will keep you motivated even as you feel the burn in your calves.

While trailheads may be hard to find due to lack of signage, this particular one can be found on Google Maps near Tereia Point. Follow the road clockwise from the Pearl Beach Resort ferry departure to discover this hidden gem.

Valley of the Kings: Most Popular Hike on Bora Bora

Around 3 hours, easy to moderate

The giant banyan tree featured on this hike is said to have inspired the “Tree of Souls” in the blockbuster Avatar, making the hike culturally significant as it was the final resting place for ancient kings of Bora Bora. Joining a guided hike is advisable, as trails are rarely signed and the area offers rich historical relics to explore.

As you trek, take time to enjoy the island’s delicious offerings fresh from the tree and appreciate the stunning views of the turquoise lagoon.

Point Fitiuu Cannons

Around 1.2 km return from the road (¾ mile), easy

Hikers seeking the well-preserved Point Fitiuu Cannons will be treated to stunning views of both Mt Otemanu and Bora Bora’s magnificent lagoon. As you walk, don’t miss the impressive geological feature known as Hiro’s Finger. Consider bringing a picnic to enjoy at one of the simple bench seats available at the cannons.

The trailhead can be tricky to locate, best accessed by following Google Maps towards Point Fitiuu. At a sharp bend in the main road, you will find a track leading towards the peninsula.

Mount Otemanu: Best for Bragging Rights

Around 6 hours return, difficult

Can you hike Mount Otemanu? This question often arises when hikers first glimpse this iconic peak. As Bora Bora’s highest feature, it is a must-see for avid adventurers. Although the summit is too crumbly and vertical to safely reach, the trek to its shoulders offers an adrenaline-pumping challenge with sections requiring the use of ropes.

Don’t miss the Cave of Mount Otemanu on the northeastern side, a historically significant place known for breathtaking views over Taha’a and Ra’iatea across the sea. While hiking without a guide is possible, the difficult terrain makes having a guide strongly recommended to avoid the risk of getting lost or injured.

Mount Pahia: Best Views of the Island

Around 6 – 8 hours return, difficult

Mount Pahia is the twin-peaked sibling of Mount Otemanu, standing at 658 m (2159ft). Hikers will be rewarded with astonishing panoramic views, not only across Bora Bora but also into the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Although reaching Pahia’s peak is challenging, incredible scenery awaits you at various points along the ascent.

Because of the challenging hiking conditions, local guides are recommended. The track can be found near Hine Pearls, just south of the Protestant Church in Vaitape. However, as there is limited signage, asking locals for directions can be beneficial.

Farepiti Cannons

Approx 2.4km return from the road (1.5 miles), 20min one way, easy to moderate

This hike offers an opportunity to see the island’s 4×4 and quad bike tours rumbling behind you. The track is well-known, making it easy to navigate. Located on the mountainside above Point Pahua, the cannons provide superb views facing both Vaitape town and Pearl Beach Resort.

Start your trek clockwise around the island on the main road, and you will soon find the dirt path leading to the cannons. Expect a mild workout for your calves but appreciate the easier section once you reach a plateau.

The Bora Bora Loop

20 mile (32km), easy to moderate

For those seeking a multi-day hiking experience, the 32-km loop around Bora Bora combines stunning coastal views with the chance to explore local eateries and villages. This trail remains accessible year-round due to its paved condition, making it an enjoyable option for hikers.
