Malta Opens Digital Nomad Visa Program for Remote Workers

Looking for a change of scenery? Malta has just opened applications for a year-long digital nomad visa program, inviting remote workers from around the world to move their home office to the Mediterranean archipelago.

Understanding the Nomad Residence Permit

The Nomad Residence Permit is available for individuals who work remotely and can continue their current jobs while residing in Malta for one year. As a European Union (EU) member state, Malta already welcomes digital nomads from the EU. However, this program now allows applicants from non-EU countries, including individuals from the United States, the United Kingdom, and more, who are eligible for a Maltese visa to participate.

Renewal and Visa Options

“The permit will be issued for one year and can be renewed upon application at the discretion of Residency Malta, as long as the applicant still meets the set eligibility criteria,” organizers stated. “For those interested in staying for less than a year, a national visa will be issued for the duration of the stay.”

Why Choose Malta?

On the surface, Malta seems to embody all the stereotypes of a Mediterranean island nation, featuring sun-kissed cities, ochre-toned buildings, and a seemingly relaxed lifestyle. However, this country rewards extensive exploration. As a long-term visitor, you’ll find a treasure trove of history, world-class architecture, outdoor adventures, unique rustic cuisine for all seasons, and blockbuster landscapes that serve as stunning backdrops for TV and film.

The Expat Environment

Malta, located between Italy and the North African coast, presents itself as a multicultural nation with a diverse expat community. English is one of the official languages here, used widely in business. Moreover, Malta boasts a robust telecommunications infrastructure and was the first EU country to implement nationwide 5G mobile internet service.

Application Requirements

To apply for the digital nomad visa, one must be fully vaccinated and provide proof of vaccination. Furthermore, health insurance is required to cover the duration of the stay, along with a €300 administrative fee. For more information, explore the Nomad Residence Permit website.
