2025 Met Gala Highlights American Fashion in Exciting Exhibition

Upcoming Exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Fashion enthusiasts should take note of the upcoming exhibitions at the Costume Institute in New York City. These major events are centered around American fashion and promise to be a significant highlight in the art and fashion calendar.

Exhibition Details

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced that these exhibitions will take place in 2021 and 2022. The first exhibition, titled In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, is set to open in September 2021 at the Anna Wintour Costume Center. This exhibition celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Costume Institute and will feature an innovative installation that illustrates a fictional American home with transparent walls. It aims to reflect the customs and behaviors of imagined occupants through the display of 20th- and 21st-century fashion.

This first part will display the designs of iconic American sportswear pioneers alongside a wide range of contemporary designers, illuminating the broad spectrum of emotional responses—fear, joy, isolation, and contentment—reflected in American fashion.

Part Two: An Anthology of Fashion

Part two of this exhibition, titled In America: An Anthology of Fashion, will launch in May 2022 at the American Wing period rooms. This part will delve into the evolution of American fashion, showcasing both historical and contemporary attire in thematic vignettes set in rooms that date back to the 18th century.

Event Schedule

In America: A Lexicon of Fashion is scheduled to be on display from 18 September 2021 to 5 September 2022 at the Anna Wintour Costume Center. Meanwhile, In America: An Anthology of Fashion will run from 5 May 2022 to 5 September 2022. The Met Gala, a key fundraising event for the Costume Institute, is slated for 13 September, with a second gala in support of the second exhibition on 2 May 2022.
