The storyline centers around Lord’s theft of an ancient artifact at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, where Diana works as a cultural anthropologist. He exploits its magical powers to grant dangerous wishes to people for his gain. The film opens with Diana’s apartment overlooking the iconic Watergate Hotel.

Filming at the Smithsonian allows viewers to see Washington DC’s most recognizable landmarks, including the White House. Additionally, scenes were shot at the National Air and Space Museum, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden—look out for Roy Lichtenstein’s Brushstroke sculpture—and the bustling National Mall. The film transports audiences to Wonder Woman’s birthplace, the fictional island of Themyscira, through stunning flashbacks to the Amazon Games of Diana’s youth. This visually captivating portion features exhilarating race scenes and sweeping Mediterranean landscapes filmed in Fuerteventura and Tenerife.

Star-Studded Cast and Filming Details

Directed by Patty Jenkins, this Warner Bros. Pictures film stars Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Kristen Wiig as Barbara/Cheetah, and Pedro Pascal as the villainous Max Lord. One notable action scene set in a mall took place at Alexandria’s Landmark Mall in Virginia, which had been shuttered for years, transformed to reflect a 1980s aesthetic.

Filming Locations Beyond the US

Wonder Woman 1984 also immerses viewers in the stunning setting of Cairo, though several related scenes were filmed in southern Spain. The magnificent Alcazaba fortress, one of the most formidable Moorish structures in Spain, alongside the Wall of Jayran in Almería, play significant roles. Filming locations in England included the Imperial War Museum in Duxford, Legal and General House in Surrey, Boston Manor Park in Brentford, and Bovington Airfield in Hertfordshire.

Wonder Woman 1984 premiered in US theaters and on HBO Max on December 25, and in Australia and New Zealand on December 26. It had already been released in cinemas across the UK, Ireland, and various other countries worldwide.
