New Freelance Permit in Abu Dhabi: A Gateway for Remote Workers
Abu Dhabi has recently announced an innovative freelance permit that enables long-term freelancers to establish their presence in the emirate. Both Emirati citizens and non-residents are eligible to apply for this exciting opportunity. Previously, the requirement was that foreigners needed to be employed by a company to work in Abu Dhabi, with freelance licenses primarily available to Emirati nationals.
This strategic initiative aims to enhance the local economy by creating freelance job opportunities across specified sectors. Moreover, it supports local talents, innovations, and expertise, contributing to the emirate’s economic diversification. Importantly, this new permit allows freelancers to work remotely, eliminating the necessity for office presence.
Freelancers interested in this new opportunity must provide proof of their work in one of the 48 designated categories, which include fields such as fashion design, web development, tourism, fine arts, marketing, and consulting. To apply for the permit, freelancers can engage with the Abu Dhabi Business Centre. Subsequently, those who do not reside in Abu Dhabi may seek a residence permit for themselves and their families once their freelance license is approved.
Abu Dhabi’s initiative mirrors similar efforts in other emirates, particularly Dubai, which recently introduced a visa for remote workers. This scheme facilitates families to live in Dubai while accessing amenities traditionally reserved for residents.
The ongoing coronavirus pandemic has significantly transformed workplace norms, prompting many office-based employees to adapt to remote work for extended periods. Consequently, a growing number of hotels are promoting Work From Hotel (WFH) packages, advocating for extraordinary discount stays and luxurious perks. Furthermore, an increasing number of countries are introducing long-stay visa options to attract digital nomads and remote workers.
