The Slovenia Green Capitals route, launching this month, takes travelers through Central Europe’s three “capitals”: Ljubljana, the administrative and cosmopolitan heart; Kočevje, a natural jewel; and the Bela Krajina region, known for its rich culture.

The Slovenia Green Capitals route is designed to provide a fresh perspective on the nation’s sustainability-focused tourism offerings. This innovative initiative ensures that travelers are equipped with a map alongside suggestions for accommodations, restaurants, and activities tailored for independent exploration. Developed by members of Slovenia’s Green Consortium with the backing of the Slovenian Tourist Board, this route embraces locales certified through the Slovenia Green brand. These destinations meet strict certification criteria that prioritize environmental considerations and sustainable practices.
Starting at the Heart of Ljubljana
Beginning in Ljubljana, visitors can choose from a variety of tastings, historic sites, and museums, or enjoy a leisurely stroll along the beautiful Ljubljanica River. One highlight is the Moustache Tour, which explores the lives of three giants of architecture, art, and literature.
Adventures in Kočevje
Approximately 65 kilometers south, the route leads to Kočevje, situated in the renowned Kočevsko region, known for its Krokar primeval beech forest, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site and part of the Natura 2000 conservation area. This region is rich in wildlife, making it ideal for guided exploration and bear-watching experiences in designated stands.
Exploring Bela Krajina
Your journey culminates around 60 kilometers east in the picturesque Bela Krajina region, known for its stunning landscapes along the Kolpa River, which borders Croatia.
