After a series of delays, Belize officially opened its borders to international travelers on Oct. 1.
The welcoming of tourists signals the start of Phase 3 of the country’s five-phased Travel Reopening Plan. As part of the country’s new health and safety protocols, a “Safe Corridor” was established by implementing a 9-point program, known as the “Tourism Gold Standard” Recognition. This program is designed to ensure that hotels, restaurants, and other tourism-related businesses meet enhanced health and safety standards. Businesses adhering to all the requirements are given the “Gold Seal of Approval.”
“We’re confident the Tourism Gold Standard Recognition Program and Gold Standard Seal of Approval will allow travelers and the tourism industry to operate safely as COVID-19 restrictions are eased,” said BTB Director of Tourism, Karen Bevans via a press release. “While visitors will need to adhere to our ‘new normal’ entry requirements and safety protocols, their experience will remain authentic to Belize’s adventurous spirit.”
What You Need to Know When Visiting Belize
Before arriving in Belize, visitors must follow a series of important steps. Immediately after receiving hotel confirmation, travelers are advised to download the Belize Health app, allowing authorities to monitor movements throughout the country. Additionally, it is essential for visitors to check into the app daily.
Travelers are encouraged to take a PCR COVID-19 test within 72 hours of arrival. According to the Belize tourism website, “A certified negative result will put you on the fast track arrival lane at the airport.”
For those who do not take a test prior to arriving, they will have to undergo testing at the airport at their own expense. Should they test positive, they will face a 14-day quarantine at an approved facility, also at their own expense. Thus far, there have been 23 recorded positive results and two deaths in the country due to COVID-19.
Airlines offering nonstop flights to Belize include American Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Airlines.
