The FAI, the Italian National Trust, has a census intended to rank Italy’s wonders based on their significance in the hearts of Italians.

The Luoghi del Cuore (literally Places of the Heart) campaign aims to highlight the richness of art and nature throughout Italy. Individuals vote both online and offline for their favorite places in the beautiful country, compiling a general ranking that has recently been published. Here are the top five locations that won the hearts of many this year.

1. Castello di Sammezzano, Tuscany

The Castello di Sammezzano is a unique residence dating back to the 16th century, obtaining its current look when purchased by a marquis fascinated by Orientalism. It stands as one of the most significant examples of this style in Italy and Europe, surrounded by a public park spanning 187 acres.

2. Railway Nice-Ventimiglia-Cuneo, Liguria and Piedmont

This renowned train line, known as “the railway of wonders,” was designed to connect Italy with France and traverse the mountains of Piedmont to the Ligurian coastline. With nearly two centuries of history, this engineering marvel climbs an impressive 1000m height difference over less than 50km.

3. Ponte dell’Acquedotto, Puglia

Located in the town of Gravina di Puglia, the Ponte dell’Acquedotto’s exact construction date remains uncertain, but it is believed to have existed since the 17th century. Originally built for crossing the creek, it was transformed into an aqueduct by a ruling family in the 18th century.

4. Bergamo, Lombardy

The enchanting city of Bergamo, located at the foothills of the Alps, is divided into two distinct areas. Bergamo Alta serves as a traditional medieval old town, characterized by its narrow streets and walls that have since transformed into walking routes. In contrast, Bergamo Bassa is the modern section, showcasing expansive public gardens and broad avenues.

5. Via delle Collegiate, Sicily

The picturesque Via delle Collegiate in Modica connects three historic churches, sharing an intertwined history and traditions. With origins dating back to the 16th century, these churches are a treasure trove chronicling the evolution of the area’s art and culture over the past five centuries.

Several smaller lists have also emerged from the collected votes, like the most cherished seaside location and the most popular historical wellness area. Notably, Sicily’s stunning Scala dei Turchi ranked as the top seaside destination, while the Ospedale Militare gardens in Taranto, Puglia, topped the wellness category.
