The Health Benefits of Watching Adorable Animal Videos
If you’re a fan of adorable animal pictures and videos and find yourself getting lost in them, you’re not alone. A recent study has revealed that procrastinating with cute animal videos can have positive health benefits.
The research conducted by the University of Leeds and Tourism Western Australia showcased videos featuring the quokka, recognized as the “world’s happiest animal,” a native species of western Australia. Participants included students preparing for an exam and academic support staff experiencing work-related stress. The findings indicate that viewing these charming animals significantly reduced their anxiety, blood pressure, and heart rates, all within just 30 minutes.
The results were remarkably positive. Anxiety levels in the group decreased by an average of 35%, with some individuals experiencing nearly a 50% reduction. Additionally, heart rates dropped by as much as 24%, and the average blood pressure fell from a state of hypertension to healthier, more normal levels. Given the study’s success in alleviating stress amongst anxious participants, the University of Leeds plans to provide future opportunities for students to watch relaxing animal content before exams.
Elen Thomas from Tourism Western Australia remarked, “The study results are a fantastic reminder that we benefit massively from exploring and enjoying the natural world. The significant improvement seen in the mood and health of participants is remarkable and indicates that wildlife experiences are vital for our wellbeing.”
