Exciting News About Hangover Relief from Finnish Researchers
There’s good news for those who tend to overindulge on vacation, as researchers from believe they have found an effective cure for hangovers. Travelers often enjoy tasting local drinks at their holiday destinations; however, experiencing hangover symptoms such as nausea, headaches, stress, anxiety, and impaired cognitive ability can dampen the fun.
The Role of L-Cysteine in Alleviating Hangover Symptoms
The results of a groundbreaking study conducted by the University of Helsinki and the University of Eastern Finland suggest that the semi-essential amino acid, L-cysteine, can effectively ease hangover symptoms. L-cysteine, a vital chemical molecule, is naturally produced in the human body. In this study, researchers recruited 19 men who consumed cranberry juice along with the 10% proof Finnish grain alcohol, Koskenkorva. The number of drinks provided to each participant was adjusted based on their body weight, ensuring a personalized approach.
Participants received one of three treatments: a placebo, a pill containing 600mg of L-cysteine, or a higher 1200mg dose. Remarkably, the study found that those who took the 1200mg pill reported experiencing significantly less severe headaches and nausea the following morning. Furthermore, participants who consumed the smaller dose noticed reduced feelings of anxiety. The researchers concluded, “The fact of the matter is that a higher degree of alcohol-related hangover and stress symptoms lead to more effort ‘curing’ the after-effects by drinking alcohol. L-cysteine would reduce the need for drinking the next day, resulting in fewer or less severe hangover symptoms, including nausea, headaches, stress, and anxiety. Altogether, these effects of L-cysteine appear to be unique and suggest a promising future in preventing or alleviating harmful symptoms, as well as reducing the risk of alcohol addiction.”
