Broadway performances in New York City have been suspended for the rest of the year and will not resume until 2021. Touring Broadway performances across North America have also been impacted significantly.
In their announcement, The Broadway League stated that theatres are now processing refunds and exchanges for tickets purchased for all performances through January 3, 2021, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Productions that are set to return are projected to resume performances on a rolling schedule in early 2021, with tickets for performances next winter and spring expected to become available for purchase in the upcoming weeks.
The Broadway League is actively collaborating with city and state officials, as well as experts in science, technology, and medicine, to formulate effective strategies for restarting the industry. Currently, they are considering important logistics for ensuring the safety of audience members and employees, including screening and testing, thorough cleaning and sanitization, and wayfinding protocols throughout theatres. Thomas Schumacher, the chairman of The Broadway League, remarked, “The alchemy of 1000 strangers bonding into a single audience fueling each performer on stage and behind the scenes will be possible again when Broadway theaters can safely host full houses.”
“Every single member of our community is eager to return to work, sharing stories that inspire our audience through the transformative power of a shared live experience. The safety of our cast, crew, orchestra, and audience remains our highest priority. We look forward to returning to our stages only when it is safe to do so. One thing is certain: when we return, we will be stronger and more relevant than ever.”
