Are you looking for a new way to explore England? This summer, new dedicated tourist trains will run along the iconic scenic railway line from Settle to Carlisle, offering cyclists and walkers a fantastic opportunity to immerse themselves in the lush English countryside. On-board, a knowledgeable guide will offer insights as the train passes significant landmarks, including the stunning Ribblehead viaduct, Ais Gill summit—which sits nearly 1000 feet above sea level—and Dent, recognized as the highest mainline station in England. This exceptional service operates from Monday to Saturday between July 20 and September 12, with first-class day return fares priced at £29 (€31.75) for individual travelers or £99 (€108.35) for a family of four.

This train initiative aims to facilitate enjoyable family outings, especially after the challenges of COVID-19 lockdowns. Initially, tickets will be available in pairs, specifically for individuals from the same household or social bubble. Each train can accommodate 128 passengers and includes space for 12 pre-booked bicycles. Additionally, the train is designed to adhere to social distancing regulations, featuring first-class carriages with separated seating using perspex screens and a streamlined boarding process.

Travelers will enjoy spacious, well-padded reclining seats surrounding private tables, complemented by expansive windows that showcase the breathtaking views of the Yorkshire Dales and the upper Eden Valley in Cumbria. Settle, Appleby, and Skipton are charming historic towns, with Skipton also serving as a hub for the Yorkshire Dales Cycleway. From Appleby, travelers can take special coaches to explore the magnificent Lake District and England’s highest market town at Alston, alongside options for the narrow gauge South Tynedale steam railway.

Adrian Quine, director of Rail Charter Services, states, “This is the first time a dedicated timetabled tourist train has operated in England, potentially transforming travel in other regions with high seasonal demand.” The trains are owned by Jeremy Hosking and operated by Locomotive Services (TOC) Ltd. Tickets can be purchased through Rail Charter Services’ website here.

As global lockdowns ease, the world is adapting to a new normal, impacting the way we travel.
