As lockdowns ease and traveling resumes around the world, the chief concern is how to ensure everyone’s health and safety. The World Travel & Tourism Council has developed an effective strategy—the “safe travels” stamp—to address these concerns.
The concept is straightforward: travelers can confirm that health and safety protocols issued by WHO are being implemented by simply looking for the WTTC official “safe travels” stamp. This initiative is open to all entities within the travel and tourism industry, including countries, cities, hotels, airlines, and restaurants.
Those interested in participating can begin by consulting the documentation provided by the WTTC, which is regularly updated. This information details how various sectors, including hospitality, shopping, aviation, airports, tour operators, and convention centers, can adapt to the new normal effectively and safely.
“Now travelers will be able to recognize businesses and destinations worldwide that have adopted the new set of global protocols aimed at encouraging the return of ‘Safe Travels’ worldwide,” stated WTTC president Gloria Guevara. “This initiative will support the travel and tourism sector in reopening for business and moving in a coordinated approach.” The “safe travels” stamp is endorsed by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation, with Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili highlighting the importance of collaboration in building trust.
Among the first destinations worldwide to support the initiative are Saudi Arabia and Portugal, along with cities such as Cancún in Mexico, Barcelona, and Seville in Spain.
