Drive-Through Concerts in Denmark Introduce Social Distancing Entertainment

With social distancing having become a norm, many individuals are longing for the shared joys of dining out, enjoying a bar atmosphere, or attending lively concerts. Denmark has ingeniously responded to this need by introducing drive-through gigs, allowing attendees to partake in concerts safely via their FM radios.

The initiative, the brainchild of three innovative companies—Front of House, Steady, and Nordic Rentals—has resulted in P Scenen. This ongoing festival offers a variety of engaging activities every day, including movie screenings, comedy acts, and live concerts. Participants can conveniently park in front of the large stage at Aarhus and tune into an audio feed transmitted through a dedicated radio frequency.

Mark Chemnitz, one of the organizers, stated, “The day our Prime Minister closed down the country, we decided to take action. We brainstormed all night and recognized that just because of COVID-19, it doesn’t mean that culture should cease to exist. On the contrary, it wants to thrive, and we want it to live! Our hope and objective is to spread positivity because we believe that it generates waves of good energy, which are essential for our hearts and minds during these challenging times.”

The companies developed a cultural platform capable of hosting various events, including music, art exhibitions, dance performances, and lectures, ensuring it is open and accessible to everyone. Recently, the renowned singer-songwriter Mads Langer captivated an audience at P Scenen.

“We shared many magical moments at the stage. A father brought his 12-year-old son to the concert; the boy had his head pressed against the window, and tears were streaming down both their faces—tears of joy and happiness. The father shared with us that his son had been struggling with extreme anxiety, and this was his first experience in an audience where he felt a sense of connection. It was magical, reminding us all of the profound significance of performance and music. For a brief moment, we stood together, albeit apart, and it was truly beautiful,” Mark reflected.
