Airlines Mandate Face Masks for Travelers: What You Need to Know

Important Travel Etiquette: Face Masks and Airline Regulations

As we anticipate a time when travel becomes unrestricted again, it is crucial to understand the emerging etiquette around flying. A primary consideration is the requirement from various airlines for passengers to wear face masks, driven by ongoing health concerns stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Airline Mask Requirements

Airline crew members have consistently worn masks, but certain airlines are now mandating passengers do the same. For instance, JetBlue will require all travelers to wear masks or face coverings starting 4 May, encompassing the entire process from check-in to deplaning. Moreover, passengers are advised to keep their masks on while navigating through the airport.

In a similar vein, airlines within the Lufthansa Group—including Eurowings, SunExpress, Germanwings, and Brussels Airlines—will enforce facial coverings for all passengers from 4 May onwards.

Recommended Masks and Guidelines

Lufthansa advocates for mask usage throughout the travel experience, including time spent in airports prior to and following flights. It is advised that reusable fabric masks be used; however, other types of coverings like disposable masks or scarves also serve as suitable alternatives. Currently, the requirement to wear masks onboard is expected to be in place until 31 August.

Government Mandates

It is currently a mandatory requirement for all passengers traveling to or from Canada to wear a face mask or face covering. All Air Canada passengers must comply with this government directive. Additionally, Malaysia Airlines has enforced mask usage since 23 April, while Korean Air has also instituted similar requirements. Although not mandated yet, airlines such as American Airlines and Delta highly encourage the use of face masks and will provide them at ticket counters, gates, and on board the aircraft.
