Innovative Disinfection Technologies at Hong Kong International Airport
Businesses and services globally are actively seeking solutions to minimize the risk of COVID-19 transmission. Notably, Hong Kong International Airport has unveiled groundbreaking disinfection technologies that merge innovation with effectiveness. These technologies include specialized disinfection channels, antimicrobial coatings, and autonomous cleaning robots.
Advanced Disinfection Channels
In an effort to safeguard passengers and airport staff from potential COVID-19 exposure, Hong Kong International Airport has become the world’s first to trial “CLeanTech,” a fully integrated, full-body disinfection channel. Passengers passing through this facility undergo a temperature check before entering an enclosed channel for a comprehensive 40-second disinfection and sanitizing procedure.
The interior of the channel is outfitted with an antimicrobial coating that effectively eliminates viruses and bacteria from human bodies and clothing. This process utilizes advanced photocatalyst technologies and “nano needles,” complemented by a sanitizing spray for immediate disinfection.
Safety Measures and Protocols
To maintain hygiene, the disinfection channel operates under negative pressure, which prevents cross-contamination between the external environment and the interior of the facility. Currently, this facility is designated for staff engaged in public health and quarantine responsibilities related to arriving passengers.
Moreover, the airport is conducting tests involving the application of antimicrobial coatings to high-touch surfaces throughout the terminal. These surfaces include handles and seats of Automated People Movers, passenger buses, smart check-in kiosks, check-in counters, restrooms, seating areas, and elevator buttons.
Commitment to Safety
“The safety and wellbeing of airport staff and passengers are always our first priority,” stated Steven Yiu, Deputy Director of Service Delivery. “Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, we remain committed to ensuring that the airport is a safe environment for everyone. We are continuously exploring new measures to enhance our cleaning and disinfection efforts.”
Future of Disinfection at the Airport
Following the trial phase, a comprehensive decision will be made regarding the long-term implementation of these disinfection measures. In addition, autonomous cleaning robots equipped with ultraviolet light and air sterilization technology are being deployed across the airport to ensure ongoing disinfection of public areas and passenger facilities.
